Freedom 32 purchase

Posted by pro8_50 (pablop@…>)

Hi All

I am contemplating the purchase of a 1984 Freedom 32. I was wondering if there
are any
areas of “concern” that I can check on myself before I make a bid on the boat,
hire a
surveyor etc. All help greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Paul

I just rehabbed an 8 4 that was in terrible cosmetic shape, but had a new engine, low mileage sails and sound hull and decks. I think these things are most important, but it costs a lot to bring a derelict back. A friend just bought one that looked good but had a hull moisture problem that will cost 7k to fix; remember these are old boats and will cost more than you imagine to bring back–but they are all that imagine. My 85 Freedom 32 had blisters on the bottom. It took three months and $4K to peel it, dry it and then re-do it but it now looks great every time we bottom paint it.

I spent a lot of time with the surveyor and having the bottom sounded with a hammer to determine the extent of osmotic damage. When complete, I got a $6K concession from the seller, and happily went off to refinish the boat.

I still have the original Yanmar 3GMF and she runs great. I have kept up with the Maintenance and had little problem with it. The diesel mechanic says that it should run forever if I keep up with it and run it properly.

All in all, we love our F-32. She sails like a dream and is very safe when we sail into bad weather (like last Month’s debacle). I owned Hunters and O’day’s but am most pleased with the Freedom. After getting used to the rig (we raced the Hunter) we find that it is the perfect blend of speed, ease and safety when single handing.

Hi Paul,
The only issues that I encountered with the purchase of my
'84 F32 was moisture around several of the thru hulls. I had to have
them removed, the hole rel-epoxied and the thru hulls
re-installed. A surveyor will find moisture just about everywhere,
but as my fiberglass guy showed me in the brand new box of end grain
balsa, there are moisture readings there in what seemed to be
perfectly dry wood. So, don’t be daunted by minor readings. If the
hull sounds correct, it probably is.
You’ll have the age issues associated with a 20+ year old
boat, but if it has been reasonably well maintained, you should not
have any problems. A “northern” boat will probably be in better
condition than a southern boat because of the winter layup. UV does
a number on plastic and canvas.
Good luck
