Freedom 35 owner needs advice

Posted by rocclear (aronella@…>)

I just concluded purchasing '94 Freedom 35, hull # 23.
I would love to talk with a current/past F35 owner, as I’ve never saild
a rig like this, and need a crash course. The boat has an asym;
I hope to race around the bouys, and sail extensively from Maine to
Bahamas. I bought the boat in Huntingtoon, LI, and will moor it in
Nyack, NY.
Thanks,

Welcome to the Freedom family Lou. I have a 1994 35 that I bought 4 years
ago. I sailed from RI to the Chesapeake and we’ve been sailing in this area
for the last 4 years. I’ve sailed a number of different boats over the
years, but find the Freedom to be the best combination of ease and
performance. You’ll beat any other boat in the fleet in a tacking duel with
the self tending rig. I can actually tack my boat, using the auto pilot,
with the push of a button. The boat will not only point, but drive at 30
degrees on either tack.

My boat is setup with the camberspar jib and main. I don’t have an asym, so
I can’t report on that. One tip I found is that, with the large main, the
mainsheet traveler becomes a real effective tool. In light air, you let off
on the main sheet, when sailing close to the wind and use the traveler to
position the boom. This puts better shape in the main and provides more
speed. In very heavy air, you can keep the main sheet tight, but keep the
boat flatter, using the traveler to dump wind.

If you haven’t tried it yet, try the man overboard drill. Just turn the
wheel in the direction of the fall, lock it down and watch the boat sail in
circles unattended.

This year I’m adding a Doyle Stackpack on the main and I’m anxious to give
that a try. It should be installed this week

Jay

Hi Lou,
Congratulations and welcome to the family. You’ll catch on pretty
quick to the Freedom style. When you come to Maine, make sure you look us
up in Pemaquid.
Best,

Dear Lou, You’ve got yourself one sweet boat. We bought ours - 10 years old - in RI last summer and brought her down to her new home in St. Petersburg FL this past fall. The previous correspondent (Jay?) gave you some really good advice on traveller use. Our boat has the jib lead to tracks - not our idea but - as former racers - very much to our liking. The jib sets much better than if it were self tacking and we really don’t relish the idea of a camber spar getting in the way when we are trying to anchor. But…that said, one of the reasons we b ought a Freedom was looking down the years to being able to sail when we are in our 70s (we are in our early 60s now). We’ll probably put the self tacking mechanics back in place so that we can sail easily. Currently it’s just a crank or two to tack with the track system. We had a Pearson 36 for 15 years and loved it (gave it up to get shallo draft for FL waters) and our Freedom has it all over her
in terms of comfort, easy of handling and qualtiy. We have a spinakker, which we really like for downwind runs. Consider that.
