Freedom 36 Air Conditioning / Heating

Posted by f36cinereous (bcw@…>)

Does anyone have experience with insallation of air conditioning
systems or Espar heating systems on a Freedom 36. I am looking for
information on where to install the systems and run the ducting
required.

Thanks
Bruce

The AC unit on my F36 was already installed when I bought the boat.
Not sure I would do it exactly this way if I had to redo it.

The unit occupies almost the entire space under the V berth.
Thruhulls, water flow tubing, filter and pump are also here. A large
return air panel is installed low on the V berth support bulkhead
next to the drawers. One air duct is dressed into the V berth
hanging closet and vents thru its forward wall into the V berth area.
Another duct is dressed into the head area just behind the toilet
(not too happy with this one at certain  times, but could come in
handy if you eat a lot of Mexican food). A third duct is fed along
the bottom of the V berth hanging closet into the bottom of the salon
hanging closet then up the aft wall of that closet and vents through
the aft wall into the salon. Works just fine. The AC controls are
also on that closet wall next to the vent. There is also a dedicated
circuit breaker panel at the nav station. A fourth duct follows a
route along the starboard side of the boat through the bottoms of:
the V berth closet, the salon closet, the storage areas behind the
salon seats, under the battery shelf, through the bottom of the aft
salon hanging closet, into the bottom of the quarter berth hanging
closet and vents out the aft wall of that closet into the quarter
berth. This one is almost totally useless. Very little cool air in
the summer or warm air in the winter makes it back to the quarter
berth. I usually use a small fan to transfer some air flow from the
salon back to the quarter berth since that is where I sleep.

I don’t think there are too many other options. If I were doing it
over, I’d consider going with a second small dedicate unit for the
quarter berth area and see if I could install it in the space between
the transom and the aft quarter berth bulkhead. This would also
require a couple of additional thruhulls.
