My Vang collar slipped up my mast last week. Is this a common problem?
Is there a recommended solution?

My Garhauer rigid vang has a rubber material between the mast and the stainless mast collar. It is simillar to inner tube rubber.

I installed a Garhauer rigid boom vang and it came without any sort of rubber sleeve. Thinking that some sort of sleeve would prevent slippage (since there’s a limit to how hard you can tighten it without risking crushing the mast), I used a hard rubber sleeve. The sleeve seems to have moved a bit in a year, but I’m not sure if that was due to insufficient tightening or the sleeve itself.

I installed a Hall Spar vang and collar set up with a ¼ or 3/8ths thick rubber gasket that is ribbed on one side in May 2002. Right after that my collar rotated about 10% to starboard while we were crossing the Gulf of Mexico from Ft. Myers to Key West during some very heavy weather. We noticed it in Key West. We retightened the collar with as much torque as I could apply by hand and it hasn’t moved since, though we haven’t been in a storm like that since either. My conclusion was, and is today that I just didn’t have it tight enough. I doubt you could crush the mast using ordinary hand tools.
Good luck!

The issue of vang collar slippage just came up last week with a
Freedom 38 owner in CA. Even with the hard rubber material between
the mast and vang collar wall there can still be some movement in
this compression ring. What I suggested and what I have seen done
is to add stainless brackets from the port and starboard bolts that
compress the vang bracket around the mast to the aluminum mast
collar that is bolted to the deck. You might also lash the vang
collar on the centerline just under the vang axle down to the mast
collar. This two or three point approach should keep the vang
bracket from moving. Good luck, Mark Edwards, Freedom Yachts

In case its of interest on my Freedom 33 the vang was attached to a custom bracket that bolted onto the mast collar with two of the mast collar bolts that go through the cabin top. The tab on the collar that sticks out facing aft looks like it was ground off so as not to interfere. Thus there was no contact with the mast at all. This year had a new custom brackets made that attach in a similar way but support boomkickers as well as vangs. This arrangement works very well has great clearance over the dodger for the mizzen and over the bow pulpit for the main and puts less stress on the attachment points then a fully rigid vang.
