Freedom 39 info

Posted by ceresma (ceresma@…>)

Hi,
I am looking at a freedom 39 a freedom 38 or possibally a Freedom 36
(I know it is a f38 - swim platform) I have several questions.

  1. The F39 is a hoyt design how does it sail? How much head room?
(this is not the pilot house version) How does it compare to the
    F36 ??

  2. The F38 … Does that swim platform really improve the
sailing??? The 36 & 38 are the same below deck right???

I really appreciate any insites you may have on these and I’m
especially interested if you have sailed more than one of these fine
boats.
Thanks

\ \ Sails great, much like a big dinghy, point and go. You can tune the helm by easing and sheeting in on the main or mizzen. These are well built boats, and if maintained hold their value. Check out pictures of Ketch 22 sailing in SF Bay at

http://home.earthlink.net/~svs.1/

I am 6’ 1", and have found only 2 spots where headroom is a problem. The
transition from galley to main saloon features a teak molding that intrudes in
to the interior and occasionally reminds me it’s there, and the same is true of
the transition from main saloon to V berth, for the same reason. Along the
center line of the interior, there is probably 6’ 5" of headroom, although I
could be off by an inch or 2.

I’ve never sailed a 36, so can’t comment.

Good luck,

Tom Marlow

I have a Freedom 36 that was just converted to a 38 over the winter. Email me in
about 3 weeks, and I will let you know about the changes. I am told that it
really does make it sail better, but we put it on for the convenience.

The Freedom 36 and 38 are pretty much the same boat except for the
swim platform you already know about. The 36/38 is a Gary Mull design
with an external fin keel and spade rudder. Most were cat sloops but
there were a few 36 cat ketches built. Unfortunately the 36 lacks
forward hull volume and was probably not the best boat for a cat
ketch conversion.

The Freedom 39 is a totally different animal. It is not a Hoyt
design. Only the original Freedoms were Hoyt designs and in the case
of the 33 Hoyt had a lot of help from Jay Paris. The 39 is a Ron
Holland design available as a pilothouse schooner or cat ketch. The
39 uses internal ballast, modified fin, with a skeg hung rudder. I
used to own a ketch and feel it’s a better boat for offshore and is a
lot faster than a 36 off the wind. The 36/38 is more fun for typical
daysailing on the Bay that most of us do. I’ve been out on my 39 in
15 foot seas and 30 knots of wind and the boat felt like it was on
rails.

Hi Dave: You and I only communicated briefly several months ago regarding my interest in a F39. I did purchase the boat, hull #21 and look forward to getting it in the water. I always follow your emails on the board as your insight regarding F39s is interesting to me as I have am a new ketch sailor having been a slooper for 20 yrs. We are looking forward to sailing Malabar in the gulf area out of corpus christi, tx later this year when we move it from our yard on the Chesapeake. keep the insightful comments coming.

I’m glad it worked out for you. Congrats on the new boat. Once you
get the boat into the Gulf of Mexico give some thought to cruising to
Isla Mujeres. If you like company there is annual race from St Pete
to Isla Mujeres but it’s a long ways to St Pete so I’d just head
straight to Mexico.

I bought a Freedom 38 last year, and brought it down to the southern Chesapeake from Tom’s River New Jersey last summer, then sailed about 21 days on the Bay in September and October. The 36/38 are the same inside, and quite a nice interior it is…very livable. I think that the swim platform, in addition to being a nice convenience and safety feature, must add a touch of speed since hull speed is always enhanced by length of water line. But you are only talking about a foot a half on the water, if I recall the 36 specs. The 38 does come in 3 keel configuartions, while the 36 only has two–6 foot deep draft and 4’ 6" centerboard. (The 38 has the wing keel, 4 foot draft, which I have.)
I’ve owned two sloops before, and chartered 25 different sloops from Tartan, Sabre, Wauquiez, Bristol, Morgan, Cape Dory, etc. etc. I think that the 38 is a great all around sailor. Stiff, very fast off the wind, and no problem going to windward either. The fastest destination to destination day sail I have ever had was a sixteen mile broad reach on this boat. A sailor friend who was with me was amazed at how comfortable we were with significant quartering seas.
I’ve talked to a couple people who have delivered 38s–one from Venezuela to New England. They also sang the boats praises.
Hope this helps,MK

I own a Freedom 39 and love it. However, my new wife is not quite as amored with sailing as am I, so I’m selling the boat. The listing is at yachtworld.com and the name of the boat is Entropy. Dave Benjamin owned it before me. He is on this chat line occasionally. The boat is located in San Diego CA.
