Freedom 39 mast wedge

Posted by richmcmahan (richmcmahan@…>)

I have a Freedom 39 express and unfortunately during the last time
the masts were pulled the plastic/rubber wedges were inadvertently
swapped from front to back. Since the wedges were of different sizes
the aft mast is now loose and requires shimming. In lieu of
replacing the original plastic/rubber with a new one (no idea where
to get one of the proper size), can I use a series of hard plastic
shims running longitudinally to the mast, between the mast and
aluminum casting located at the deck? Would omitting the small
amount of movement the original plastic/rubber wedge provided, cause
any potential problems?

Remove the old shims, and use Spartite. It will make a nearly waterproof seal.
I have had Spartite seals for main and mizzen for approximately 5 years now.

I own Ketch 22, an F39 hull #22 ( http://home.earthlink.net/~svs.1/ ). I’m
curious about your boat name, hull # and location.

The wedges are polyurethane,80 dur hardness. If you need shimming,go to a
lumber yard, get shims used to level windows(cedar, and very cheap),wedge them
between the mast partners and the polyurethane, drive them in with a mallet
or hammer, break them off ,and you’re done. Do not put the wood against the
mast. There should be NO movement at the partners or the step.I did replace
the factory shims doing as you said. I bought poly bar stock, cut them to fit
on a bandsaw. Final fit via wooden shims. Works just fine, and easy in,easy
out. Do not wedge @ the mast collar, only @ the partners.
