Freedom 45 questions

Posted by lance_ryley (lance_ryley@…>)

Well, we’re back from the first major cruise on Glory, and I’ve
learned a lot about the F45 in a short two weeks. Overall, I’m very
pleased with the boat although it does take quite a bit of wind to
get her going. Once she’s going, though… wow.

I have two questions, though. The first is about ventilation during
rain storms. Since nearly all of the portholes are angled in such a
way that they can’t be opened if it’s raining, and therefore
obviously the opening hatches can’t be either, I’m wondering how
others have dealt with this. With 5 people down below, it can get
pretty stuffy pretty fast. I was considering putting some dorades in,
or maybe just solar vents in the primary hatches, but want to hear
what others have done first. I’ve been trying to figure out how to
make the stainless steel portholes more rainproof as well, but I
suspect that I would either have to put some sort of rain gutter on
them, or build some sort of slope for the bottoms so that they drain
properly.

Secondly, has anyone added a propane or diesel heater to their 45?
We’re contemplating it for Glory, but want to hear the plusses and
minuses of different systems. The diesel heaters seem to have higher
btu output, but I’m not even sure what I should be considering as an
acceptable range.

All comments are welcome, and I’ll write a more detailed description
of our trip later.

For quiet economical heat it’s difficult to do better than the espar
or webasto heaters.

re: boat heaters When I lived and sailed in Seattle the guys there swore by their Refleks boat heaters. Saw one on a Alaskan salmon seiner with circulating hot water radiators.
