Freedom lays off 25, tools up for new model

Freedom Yachts in Middletown, R.I., recently laid off 25 employees
as a result of sluggish sales this year, but company officials say
they hope to rehire workers as production begins on a new boat early
next year.

“'05 hasn’t been our favorite year,” said Roe O’Brien, vice
president of marketing and sales, in a phone interview.

O’Brien says qualified customers this year have shown interest in
the company’s products but sales, particularly this fall, have been
slow. The company, which now has 60 employees, makes Freedom
sailboats and Legacy powerboats.

The company is optimistic about 2006, however, with the introduction
of a new 32-foot powerboat. O’Brien says interest in the boat has
been high and pre-sales have been strong. The company is currently
tooling for the new boat and production likely will begin in January.

“Until we have the tooling, we didn’t want to carry the extra
workers until then,” says O’Brien.

Let’s see… skyrocketing fuel prices, a full season of storms in sun-
land, and no sailboats in their product line. The early prediction
is that next year’s storm season will be as bad as this one was -
think powerboat sales are going to pick up?
