I have to rerig a Freedom 40 - conventional booms 3 slab reefs.
Can anyone advise on how the single line reefing pennants are run?
Best regards
Roger

That’s going to depend on your boom configuration. You’ll have to
figure out how it turns at the luff end of the boom based on what
they built there, but…here’s the rest.
Starting at the line jammer…forward thru any fairleads, up through
the turning block at the mast base…(turn it somehow at the
gooseneck end of the boom)…up to the (traveling)block with the
reef hook on it…back down again into the boom around the sheave
and thru the inside of the boom to the leach end…Around the sheave
at the leach end and up thru the reef cringle on the
leech…straight back down to the boom end (mine goes thru a padeye
at this point) around the boom end and tied off to itself with a
bowline.
It’s important NOT to terminate it at the reef cringle in the leech,
as this puts ALL the pressure “outward” and none of it “downward” at
the leech. You may want to put a stopper knot in the end of the 2nd
reef and “let it” be pulled against the cringle until you think you
may need it, then tie it off to the boom (like after the first reef
is set). This will “tidy things up” a bit at the outer end of the
boom and cut windage.
I sometimes use my first reef line as a “cunningham” (without easing
the halyard). In VERY light air, I don’t hook the reef hook thru the
luff cringle, but just snug it up until the traveling block is “two
blocked” at the boom.
I only have a 1st and 2nd reef line rigged (although the cringles
are there for the 3rd). I suppose I’d be “unrigging” the first reef
to get in the 3rd (after putting in the 2nd). I don’t look forward
to that exercise. I can’t see running with 3 reefs in the mizzen
anyway. By then, it’s gonna be down and tied off.
Hope this helps.

After writing my previous post, I happened across the “Freedom
Manual” (pdf file) in the “files” section of this website.
Go to that manual and look at page 36 (top of page) “bubble #19”.
This is the way mine is rigged at the gooseneck end. It looks
NOTHING like the diagram on page 35 (“Isomat Boom” section")…but
look at page 35 for “what to do” on the leech end of the boom. (This
is as I “attempted” to describe it)

Hi,
I’m looking to replace the 4 portholes with some nice brass or
something similar. All I’ve found so far have been of very iffy
quality. The portholes are approx. 15.5 x 7.75 inches. Has anyone any
information of a place that sells good quality product that I may be
able to Obtain?
