We have a “new” Freedom 32 which we are enjoying enormously. But the mosquitos will arrive in Maine soon, and we only have those press-in screens for the smaller portholes.
Is there a source of screens for the companionway and the large hatches in the center of the main and forward cabins? If not, has anyone made them, and how?

Hi Judith,
You can buy a screen cover for a baby crib and sew weights
into the perimeter and lay the screening materials on the outside of
the main hatches. That way you can open and close them at will. By
the way, the mosquitoes have already arrived here in the Pemaquid
region and are living up to their reputation as the Maine State Bird…
Good luck,
TW

I have a Freedom 28 (mull), and have made screens for the hatches
with the “No-See-Um”-proof fabric screening using 5 mm plywood as the
frame, gluing the screening to it, and using Velcro to hold it to the
hatch frames from inside. I also have similar companionway hatch
screens. Herm

We have press on Velcro screens for all of our hatches.
Easy to make. Sailrite has the screen (get the right size for the bugs in
your area or pay!) and the Velcro. Velcro is everywhere…and the
adhesive back has held for 10 years thus far.
Very easy to sew (or so says Kim). She sewed the Velcro to
a piece of canvas for a backing for the frames. That way they roll up for
storage during the winter (non-bug) months.
For the companionway we did what others suggested…screen
plus weights. Kim sewed small canvas bags filled with sand so they
would hold up but not clunk or clank. They are attacked to the screen in
key places and hold it down well in any breeze.
We would like to create a screen for around the dodger/bimini
due to the no-see-ums in the Bahamas summer nights but have not been that
industrious. Ideas would be welcome for that.
Good luck!

Scott, you can buy outdoor umbrella nets (like to fit over you table
/chairs under the umbrella). Some even come weighted at the bottom.
We center that on the bimini and spread it all around. Have been at
anchor with the screen thick with hungry mosquitos while we sat out in
the cockpit watching a movie on the laptop. The only problem is the
netting isn’t the strongest and can be ripped if you aren’t careful.
But these are cheap on eBay!

Thanks TW,
Sounds very ingenious !
Are you in the water yet? We will keep an eye out for you. We were in Christmas Cove last weekend, with a delightful walk over to South Bristol, then back to Blakes at Boothbay where we are moored for the summer. Our F32 is “ESPRIT”. Judith and Carl

Thanks!!!
I found them on eBay and am trying to figure which one is
perfect.
When I figure that out and order, I will let everyone know my
findings.
This will make a huge difference for summer sailability!

We just finished making some of these “drop-over” screens, based on the ones we
saw on s/v Honey Moon. We used tulle, the fine mesh fabric often used for
wedding veils. It’s fine enough to stop no-see-ums as well as mosquitoes (so the
no-see-ums are getting in through the portlight screens instead – dang).
We opened our hatches to 90 degrees and created a shape that simply drops over
that, with the weights at the bottom, going around the outside of the hatch
flange.
For the weights, try a fishermen’s supply store and ask for “lead line.” Not the
kind you use for depth soundings, but a series of little lead weights inside
braided line, normally used to make fish nets go down to the bottom. If you can
find it in reasonable quantities (we had to buy ours used), it is probably
easier to work with than individual weights are.
The best thing about these screens is that you can open or close the hatch from
inside while they are in place, which is nice given the thunderstorms we have
around here. If you don’t take the time to shove it out of the way, some of the
screen gets stuck inside when you close the hatch, but it doesn’t hurt much.
Best of luck fighting the bugs!

p.s. We also bought an electric fly swatter, which doesn’t work on flies but is
great for slow-moving mosquitoes.
