Folks,
Pursuant of our escape from the frozen north to the sunny Caribbean, we’re
in the process of refitting our F32 to take up permanent residence where the
sun does shine and the rum is cheaper than the water. As part of this
preparation, we need to review our ground tackle. We have a pair of high
strength Danforths, 18 and 25 lbs., that, along with about 300 feet hemp
rode, have served us well in North East waters. They hold well in the types
of bottom we have around here but how will they do in the coral sand of the
Caribbean? Any opinions/facts/articles of faith regarding the best
all-around anchors/rode for the Islands?
Thanks

John and Karen,
we have been based in Treasure Cay, Abaco, Bahamas since last
November, on an F30 (converted to a 32 by the addition of a swim
platform). We use a 22lb Claw (Bruce copy) and 15 lb Fortress
(Danforth type). Now that the water is clear enough to see how the
anchor is set, I notice that both anchors have trouble digging in
completely in the typical sand (often mixed with grass) that is
prevalent here. They will stand the strain of backing down, but
might drag if the wind became strong (as it seems to do
unpredictably) or shifted. If we didn’t have a permanent mooring,
we would probably invest in a CQR …
