Hand Cranking any Yanmar GM Series

Posted by John Jones (a1john@…>)

Hi All again: Sitting at the keyboard for other messages it occured
to me to add my two cents on the subject of hand cranking. If you
really try to crank a GM series with the compression leavers “off” and
then have someone engage one cylinder I can promise you that it feels
like getting hit by a Mack truck. You will stop your rotation so
quickly you can easily get hurt. Can’t be done! Other diesel brands
often have a large flywheel that you can crank and store a lot of
inertia making them very easy to hand crank. The Yanmar flywheel has
a very small diameter, a fact that most of us appreciate. It is worth
mentioning that if your batteries are low, try dropping all
compresson levers, engage the starter and if it spins at a fair speed,
engage just one cyclinder and if if starts to “chug” then engage any
others. Good luck and don’t tear or break any of your limbs, etc.

You are right on John, My first engin was a vovo with large fly wheel and I started with the krank all the time it was easy. I would place both compression levers up then get the flywheel going as fast as I could, reach up and flip the leavers one at a time and she would start right up. I replaced the vovo with a yamar and have not been able to start it with a hand crank no flywheel inertia ,plus to much compression. your way with both levers up and even a weak batt will turn it over just flip one lever at a time Jack George, John Jones <a1john@…> wrote: Hi All again: Sitting at the keyboard for other messages it occured to me to add my two cents on the subject of hand cranking.
