Hardness of Spartite

Posted by michel.capel (michel.capel@…>)

All,

I need to make new rubber or PU mast collars for Alabama Queen (F44).
I can use Spartite but also other two part hardness PU-rubbers.
Spartite is 55-60 Shore hardness, some say even too soft for
conventionally rigged masts.

I fear that it is far too soft for our freestanding poles; I’m
thinking of shore 80 or 90 hardness instead.

How is your experience with Spartite?

thanks for your opinions.

I made new mast wedges from polyurethane barstock,80 durometer.,rather than Spartite. I was afraid of gluing the masts in place by accident. Works fine for 5 years.80 durometer is like a shoe heel in hardness, and is similar to the original

I used spartite on both the mast of my F-33
at the deck level a couple of years ago. This is only between the aluminum collar
and the mast. I still use the original inserts that are beneath that (they seem
even softer) .
I haven’t been in extended bad weather
with them but have been surfing around 10 knots for 4-6 hours in 30-35knots and
done a lot of beating in 30 knots. I’ve had the masts out and seen no deterioration
on the spartite or surrounding areas.

Michael - I used Spartite on a C&C 35 that I owned before my Freedom
because the mast on the C&C was not the orginal mast. The rig was very
loosely tuned and the Spartite seemed to function well. The only
problem I occassionally ran into was that the Spartite would inch its
way up the mast a bit. I would bang it down with a 1x1 board and a hammer.

Good Luck

I don’t have enough space for wedges; There is only half an inch
space around my main mast, which is not the original. I found PU-
mould rubber from a local artist supply shop available in different
durometers. I think i’m going to use that, because that was what I
removed. It’s an amber/transparent type of PU and it’s a lot cheaper
that spartite too.

Hello Michel,

I used Spartite on my mizzen in place of the original collar in 1999.
A year later, I did the same for the main. I’ve had no problems ever
since. I haven’t removed the masts since then, but I followed
instructions and put Vaseline on the masts so the Spartite wouldn’t stick.

At the time I installed it, Spartite had two grades. They recomended
the “racing” grade for unstayed masts. I don’t know if they still
have two grades, but if they do, the racing grade is harder than the
regular.

I spoke with the Spartite people a few
years ago before doing my main and mizzen. They didn’t mention having two
types and I only saw one to order.
In my case I put Vaseline to prevent the
spartite from sticking to the aluminum collar but did let it adhere to the mast
since I couldn’t think of any reason not to. Its worked very well.
My only advise other then sealing below it
very well before pouring is to not overmix and to work quickly since it can set
up very fast in the can or bucket and then you waste a lot.

spartite now only makes the 55-60 Shore / durometer hardness.
