Heavy Mainsail

I have been recently evaluating the Strong Track vs the Harken Batt Car System.
I have seen some negatives regarding the two systems. I wonder if anyone with
actual experience would comment:

The negative of the Harken is of course cost. It will almost cost me nearly
twice the price of the Strong Track. I’ve been unable to unearth any other
negatives. I am looking at the Harken A Slide System.

Positives are performance and reliability.

The negative of the Strong Track is longevity, particularly in tropical
climates. Positive is ease of installation and cost. For those of you with the
hardware, is this an accurate portrayal?

1)Don’t know yet - have only had mine for 4.5 years in south Texas.
2)Yes

you might call dutchman as well to see. they have a ‘strong track’
like system, and their batten cars for normal mast track are good
and less expensive than harken.

The latest Sail Magazine (I believe) Has an article on four systems (I think). Sorry about being so vague, but the mag is on the boat, and I’m at home. I plan to go down to the boat in the next day or so if you want me to follow-up.

Paul,

I have the Harken system (F36). It was on the boat when I bought it and I love it. It would be difficult to raise the big sail without it, but more important is when I am ready to lower, we simply go into the wind and release the halyard and the sail flakes into the lazyjacks. We have lost a couple of the bushings (Harken calls them tophats) where the sail is bolted into the cars and I mentioned this to a Harken representative at a boat show and he shipped ten of them to me at no charge…so I would say you get what you pay for and I am sold on my bat car system…

I can’t speak to the longevity of the Strong Track since I’ve only had mine up a year, but it is very easy to install and the cost cannot be beat. And the sail comes down like greased lightning. You might get in touch with Strong Track and ask them about longevity. It is not a new system, so I suspect they have some data.

I installed strong track on my mizzen, in 2002, and sailed since then all over the Southern Caribbean in all kinds weather. I have yet to find a negative with this product. The big plus, besides price, over Harken, is that there are no ball bearings to worry about.“Lorman, Alvin J.” <ajlorman@…> wrote:

I have the Strong Track on my F36. Works great and has been on for a number of years but I’ve only had the boat for two of these. See my post about 9/15/05 titled “THIS is customer service” for a look at how well they treat their customers.
