Holding Tank F36/38

Posted by ketchman47 (katch47@…>)

Has anyone removed the holding tank? I get quite an odor after
flushing- want to remove, replace hoses etc. almost looks like it
comes out aft through the bulkhead into the locker space under the
port settee. Info? Thanks

Take a damp rag and wipe your hoses. If the rag smells that’s part of
your problem. Check your vent hose as well. It’s possible that it’s
come off somewhere or the hose is simply in poor shape. If the odor
is much more noticeable after flushing it’s probably not the tank
itself. Are you regularly running some vinegar through your head? If
you’re in salwater consider using freshwater to flush while at the
dock. You can do it easily by teeing into your sink drain line and
simply filling the sink with the drain seacock closed. When you pump
out try flushing out the tank a few times. When we were living aboard
we’d pump out the tank, fill with fresh water, pump out, and repeat.
We used to use a product called KO I think. It was some sort of
natural enzyme or something. We never had any real issues with head
odors once we had figured this stuff out.

I bought an F25 last fall and removed the holding tank and all the hoses. I’m
installing a new
holding tank, bypassing the overboard discharge, and using the discharge
thru-hull as an
inlet for a deckwash system. I bought the new holding tank from Tank-Depot; the
hoses and
deckwash pump, from Hamilton Marine. Although it’s not a pleasant job, it’s
relatively simple.
The holding tank on the F25 is located beneath the port setee, along with the
two thru-hulls.

I had the original 12(?) gallon holding tank taken out, installed a 30 gallon tank (slightly to port side under V-berth) which I ordered from Paul Dennis at Warren River Boatworks in Rhode Island. (I believe he got it customized from Ronco(?) in California.) Paul sent a diagram and some instructions for installation to my yard in Virginia. I had my yard take out all the old hose, and based upon their recommendation we installed the most expensive (nearly $8 a foot!) hose on market. We kept the same plumbing…i.e. hoses not only forward to holding tank but aft to the seacock for overboard pump out underneath galley. Very happy with this alteration, especially now that we are in Lake Michigan and cannot pump overboard. There is no odor, although I have learned that no matter what you should get tank pumped out weekly if it contains solid waste to keep things as fresh as possible. (Just the idea of sleeping over the holding tank…!)
Good luck.

I took the entire setup out of my F39 and installed an Airhead
composting toilet- I can’t get over how great it smells down below
(adds another vent) and the new space left over from the holding tank
in the forepeak for storage and
no more kids clogging the valves!

Greg, How many amps per day does the composting toilet require ? None! I use a 24/7 nicro vent along with the supplied computer fan
running off a solar cell. I also eliminated two throughhulls and all
those hoses. I converted the holding tank pumpout fitting into a
windlass foot switch.

Greg, I understand that very little amperage is needed, for 2 fans, as supplied by solar cells. Does the head dry out quickly enough the deposits from, say 4 people on a 2 week cruise. The reason the Airhead composting works so well is that it seperates
the solids from the liquids. Urine tends to kill the composting
process and keeps things too wet. So yes, I had four on board for 10
days with no problem. You might want to have another urine
container or run a line to a seacock as urine is nearly
sterile and what male hasn’t peed overboard?
(It’s also easy ennough to bring a backup composter if things do get
a bit full!) — In freedomyachts2003@yahoogroups.com, andre
