Al Lorman wrote in August that he couldn’t find an
inexpensive holding tank monitor. I ran across the receipt the other day for
the one I put in my F 30. I ordered it from West Marine, it’s a Tankwatch
MFG # 313000312 cost $60. Works great. No more overfills up the vent, etc…

I have an even cheaper tank monitor - the Mark 1 human eyeball. Very
failsafe. No installation needed. Works on any boat where the tank is
visible.

If it was me I’d just drill a hole in whatever surrounds the tank
and install either an inspection cover or a decorative vent of some
sort. I ventilate all my storage areas anyway so another vent
wouldn’t be too noticeable. I usually don’t wait until a tank is
full to pump it out. I like to periodically treat the tank. Our
pumpout routine goes like this.
- Pump out the crap.
- Fill the tank with fresh water from a nearby hose.
- Pump out the water.
- Add Odorlos or similar product.
I regularly use vinegar to keep the head smelling sweet. When we
lived aboard we never had any funky odors from the head.
\
But the tank’s not visible on mine.
