Holes in the mast

Posted by Sward (swardfullsail@…>)
Hi all,

This is one last confirmation that it is ok to put 3 small holes in the front of the carbon fiber mast for a steaming light/deck light. I have the light and the guy to put it on, but want to be sure that it’s ok-don’t want the mast to come down because of a little light. Having the boat hauled on Monday for a new washdown pump on the bow-his idea was to mount the pump in the bilge and run the hose up to the chain locker-was good suggestion. Also he is going to install my watermaker. He wanted me to get a new electric panel as these things need circut breakers and I am out of spares, so that’s another project. He is going to go up the mast to run a new LED anchor light-hope the wiring goes well, I have my doubts. He is also going to run the new rudder cable for me. Probably a couple of misc. things-don’t know what they are at this point! I will paint the bottom

I got new windows and attempted to install them myself. I decided against lexan since it was twice the price and I didn’t think I needed the strength It was expensive though-I also got 2 black panels to replace the mirror sliders behind the sink in the head that where old and nasty looking. So, what they suggested for installing the windows was to get this foam insulation type tape to put around the windows to hold it in place when I was applying it. Then I was to fill the gap with the 3M product called Sil Proof, so I bought the 1/2" tape-mistake= makes the window stand off the blue combing too far. I will have to take that window out and do it again. I did do another one without the tape and it looks great. Yes the black goop is messy, but works. One down-5 to go!!!

That’s my story for today-is it OK to put the holes in the mast for the light-my bottom line question?

Thanks so much

Looking for a marina in Rhode Island (Narragansett would be preferred)to put my Freedom 38. Would love a place that 1. allows me to do work. 2. Is reasonably priced 3. Has some experience in pulling an unstayed mast. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Ed Reiss

Sward,

Keep in mind, that there is also one bigger hole for the wire,
about 1/4" Per coast guard regs, you do not need a steaming light below 39Ft. But you just may want one. The real challenge is securing the wire in the mast, or it bangs.
This was not fun at anchor sleeping in the forepeak. So do you really want a steaming/deck light?

Regards,

van

Sward:

A
few years ago, I spoke to a tech at GMT Composites about drilling holes in the mast.
He said that if the holes were at least as far from each other as the diameter
of the screw, you were fine. I really doubt that 3-4 holes will have a major
impact. You may be able to use a hole smaller than ¼” for the wires. They’re
pretty small.

Thanks Al, maybe we can get together on my boat after the work is done, in a couple of weeks before I leave.

I had that same light (combo steaming light, deck light) installed
while the mast was pulled in RI by Paul Dennis, who used to work at
Freedom when they were building sailboats. He had no problem drilling
the mast for the light. The deck light is a great convenience…
