Hi,
When we bought hull 79 earlier this year, the specs said 6’1" draft,
but it seems that she might actually be drawing a lot more with only a
‘light’ load. I tried to measure the ‘scum line’ after whe was hauled
and it looks as though she might have been drawing 6’6 or more. Looks
like 6’1" is possible only when 100% empty and dry. I have an
undetermined amount of lead trim weight on the port side. I thought it
was about 400 pounds but that’s a guess. With the starboard water tank
empty she lists slightly to port. I did re-engine but the new 3YM-30
is nearly identidal to the old one.
What’s typical? On this boat the batteries are on the port side and
I’m working hard to trim by some other means than the lead ingots.

Alan:
I can’t speak to the Hoyt 32, but this has come up before on the Mull 30. The shoal draft model is listed as 4’6", but I’ve measured three and never found one less than 4’11". Others have reported the same thing. So perhaps the Hoyt and Mull have inaccurate listed draft in common.

I own Hoyt 32 hull #25, and the first time I hauled, I had the opportunity to measure the “actual” draft, and came up with 6’ 5", based on the good old “scum line” method. With the flat water in my slip, it’s very accurate. I think that you’re probably right in the assumption that the original draft specs were predicated on no load, and probably half tanks. That, with the rather narrow waterline beam of the Hoyt 32 would probably account for additional draft when compared to the designed (read, assumed) draft. Plus, a lot of stuff has been added on most boats which would certainly effect the immersion of the hull, as the design is plainly not designed to be a “load carrier”. I do not have lead ingots in place on the port side to counter the water tank. I don’t know if that is something TPI did on the later versions, or was added by a previous owner. I suspect the latter. I have solved the starb’d
(water tank) list by stowing all the heavy things I can (tools, and the like) on the port side, and have minimized the list considerably. By the way, my batteries are located under the companionway steps, centerline. Alan,
Get the lead out.
There is no need for it. The boat will sail better with 400 less lbs
of weight. It’s very common for boats to be out of trim somewhat.

Nope but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
I’ve been around boats a long time. You don’t start adding lead like
that to “trim” the boat. F-32’s aren’t cargo vessels. The fact that
the guys boat lists in the direction of the lead when his water tank
isn’t full pretty much proves it doens’t belong there.
