Hoyt F30 head and rudder

Posted by isleblues (milo.militello@…>)

FYI . . .
I just replaced my Groco head; the base is now bronze instead of
plastic, which is better, however the mounting holes are different. So
if you need to replace your head you will have to drill new holes and
plug up the existing holes.
I also re-packed my rudder post stuffing box. The flax size is 7/16"
and it requires two wraps (more than two will require longer bolts than
the original bolts). There are 4 grease fittings as well: 2 below the
flange and two at the top of the rudder post.
You need a lot of flexibility and patience.

I’m curious, did you get at your rudder gland from the cockpit locker, or did you go in thru the (via) the aft stateroom? The reason I ask, is that I have found in my Hoyt32 I can get to the rudder and steering gear from that side (aft stateroom) with relative ease, tho I must admit that I’ve had all the trim/wood off so many times I’m considering attaching it with velcro (joke). Anyway, if you haven’t tried that way in, you might want to, you can even lay down fairly comfortably, as opposed to wadding yourself up in the cockpit locker.
By the way, thanks for the size of the packing material…

I too have taken that trim off so many times that the screws don’t fit anymore, although I don’t see how you can get to the packing gland from there. Although I did do the contortion thing in the aft cockpit to repack mine. Took awhile for the black and blues and pains to go away from that procedure! Now on to the next problem!

Having trouble-more like not able to start the engine. I called Yanmar and he told me to get a marine electrician to check all the bundles of wires as the boat is old and probably something is wrong there, as I have had the starter rebuilt, run a new wire from the starter to the ignition and the ignition to the push button, and replaced the push button.

I love my boat, but as in any boat, there are continuous problems-Hoyt 32. It’s getting frustrating.
