In the Market

Posted by jeffsyks (jsykes@…>)

I’m a rank rookie looking for advice and possible leads on finding the
right boat. A friend of mine owned a Gary Mull designed '92 Freedom
38. His father had a Gary Mull designed Freedom 45 built, which he
cruised. They have convinced me that Freedom is an excellent choice
and I’m now looking for a good used Freedom. I’m in the San Francisco
Bay Area and plan on day sailing and spending up to a week or so at a
time on the boat. I’ve been on a couple of Freedom 38’s and I don’t
want to go larger. I’d appreciate any advice on whether to limit my
search for a Freedom to a Gary Mull design (of which my friend and his
father both speak very highly). I’d also appreciate advice about
potential availability of Freedoms up to 38 feet. Feel free to
respond by asking questions as I doubt I’ve given enough information
to get useful responses. Thanks in advance.

Please read the review on the Freedom 35 in Practical Sailor. You may find this to be your ideal boat.

I’ll put in a plug for the Hoyt 32’s. I own an 84 and it does everything I
want it to do. It will stand up to a breeze, is simple to use and handle
(not difficult to single hand and easy for 2) and with hot and cold running
water, it provides spacious, civilized cruising.
Good luck.
