A friend of mine chartered one for a week out of Newport back in the 80’s.
Never did get to sail it much due to lack of wind. Found that they had
crammed too much furniture into the interior. It felt claustrophobic to me.

We have one and absolutely love it.
It is spacious and comfortable, easy to sail, and easy to live on for
cruising as there is a lot of room and storage.
We particularly like the amount of light and air in the cabin.
I will have my husband e-mail you later to give you more information about
the technical aspects.
When we went to be Freedom event a couple of years ago at Block Island,
owners of other Freedom’s also seemed to love it and we were giving tours to
everyone who was there.

Ron Holland designed the pilothouse on Garry Hoyt’s
hull. Look for ones that have both steering stations
still in place so you can get out of the sun (Florida)
or out of the cold (Wisconsin). The interior steering
station also doubles as the chart table and keeps
everything handy.

David,
As Natalie said we have a pilot house with 2 steering stations and love it.
The light below along with a roomy forepeak, galley and master head is
wonderful. She sails beautifully and at the Freedom rendezvous they had a
race for the cat ketches and the 39 schooner. The schooner is the scratch
boat and we won. In talking with the guys at freedom they admitted they
weren’t sure why the schooner is faster than the 39 express, but it
apparently is. With just the 2 sails getting to 6+ knots is not hard and in
15 knots of wind 7 is very doable as well. Mechanically the engine, packing
box/tube are all easy to get to. You go through the aft cabin chest of
drawers and can inspect the steering gear with ease.
We’ve been out in everything from light air to 30+ knots and with reefing
the boat handles really well. We raced one Columbus dau against other
racer/cruisers in 25-30 knots. We had two on board they had 8-10. Up wind we
held our own losing ground, but not as much as you might think. Off the wind
we cleaned up. The boat does like wind, we are not a light air boat.
On our boat the construction and finish are top drawer and I’ve only had to
do basic maintenance. I have reset the pilot house windows the forward
slant ones are 3/4" thick. My biggest challenge was re-running the dual
cables for shifting to make them easier. I could do it myself, but I would
be glad to share my experience with the alignment, etc. Raising the sails
is an effort. An electric drill will take the mainsail up about 2/3 and the
foresail 3/4, but the last part of the trip is done by hand. The two speed
winches make it easy, but it is more work than roller furling.
I have not changed to a max-prop and still run the 3 blade. The good news
is that true to Freedom design if I want to go dead up wind I use the iron
lung (Yanmar) and can do 6 knots with a knot in reserve. I know of some one
who put on a max-prop and said the handling was unbelievable and he did not
lose any speed.
I must also say, the absence of rigging, and extra sails is a pleasure. MY
whole sail plan is on board at all times and reefing is all done from the
cockpit. Sailing from below is with hydraulic steering and takes some
getting used to.
All in all we recommend the Pilot House highly. For the money and dependent
on your plans it is hard to beat.
Good luck. If you want to see plans or copies of an original brochure I
have one.
Take care and feel free to ask any questions.

I’m pretty sure both the 39 Express and Pilothouse schooner are 100%
Ron Holland designs. I don’t think Hoyt had much to do with the hull
design. IMHO Hoyt gets overcredited at times. For instance noone ever
mentions Jay Paris’s involvment on the 33. The original 40’s were not
designed by Hoyt either. That was a Hereschoff design. Hoyt’s real
accomplishment is in the rig and clever marketing.
