Thank you all for the support and advice. You really make it easy
getting to know my new F30! I ended up letting the Yanmar dealer do
the work, with Yanmar parts on the alternator for two reasons; One all
the discussion created a little uncertainty in my mind and two the
Michigan sailing season is rapidly comming to a close. Time is
valuable!
The other problem I had was a bad shore power charger. Imagin that,
both gone at the same time! Murphy’s Law. I am doing this job myself.
The local yard wanted $700. I found one at Jack Rabbit Marine for
$125. They were very helpful. So much so that I want to share their
web page - http://www.jrenergy.com. Good advice, no pressure, service,
prompt shiping. Many of you probably know about them, but for those of
you who don’t, it’s a good spot.
Thanks again, this is a great community!

front pulley side load. Balmar says that their OEM replacement (70-
80 amps) is within those spec’s. I would be very cautious in using
anything above 90 amps. It’s not gonna affect the front end of the
engine immediately, but it’s probably gonna happen some time when
you REALLY need the engine (when else?). As far as I’m concerned
the
real benefit in a unit like Balmar, Ample Power, and the like is
the
smart regulator that is tailored to the output of the alternator. I
don’t care how big and powerful an alternator is, it’s worthless if
it’s choked down to a trickle by a “dumb” regulator (IMHO of
course).

Correct. The front end of the Yanmar will not sustain that side
load. This has been discussed in this forum in the past… I have a
70 amp Balmar, and cannot run the alt at full load while underway. I
won’t be able to achieve cruising rpm,so I use the half power
setting . While charging at anchor,I use full load.

Alternator!?!That’s one reason I had mine rebuilt. I recall reading (but I
can’t remember where) that the only Balmar that MIGHT work on a
2GM20F without new pulleys was the smallest, and even that was a
bit
higher in amps than was recommended for the single belt. I think
the issue is not that the Balmars won’t work if you don’t change
the
belts and pulleys but that you don’t immediately know what kind of
wear you are subjecting your engine to.-----Original Message-----

Two
belts are needed requiring another pulley on the crank and
waterpump.— In freedomyachts2003@yahoogroups.com, Sward

Alternator!?!Before you jump, take the alternator to an automotive
alternator
rebuilder and have him test it. It is an Hitachi unit and is
rebuildable. Way way cheaper. Yanmar wants $700 for those
puppies
and
you can buy a double foot Hitachi for $300. Bettter yet, you
can
get
a
High output Balmer with external regulator for not a lot more
money.— In freedomyachts2003@yahoogroups.com, “methomp”

$1600.00!! I think I can just buy a new battery charger at
West
Marine
or some where and it should be relatively simple (Just insert
the
new
one where the old one was.) The alternator seems to be
sitting

out there in the opeen as well.Am I missing something or can I do these jobs myself? Has
anyone
had
any expience with these tasks?
