Insurance and Carbon Fibre Masts

Posted by Larry (satoriboat@…>)

With my insurance renewnal upcoming I was referred to a highly
regarded broker who does only marine insurance. When he heard the
word carbon fibre he made it clear this was a red flag to his
carriers. Anyone have a broker who is not put off by CF masts? Thanks
in advance for your response.

My policy is through International Marine Insurance Services, 410-827-3757. Also, BoatUS did not have any concerns about a CF mast.

Not an issue for USAA or Boat US

Carbon fiber masts may become an issue when our mast(s) replacement cost is/are more than the agreed on ( underwriters fix an absolute maximum )replacement value of our whole boat. No problem for me yet. New policy too. Insurance co.s had difficulties insuring for over 12,500$ . Former owner paid 10K and added 24,000$ in installed equipment. Have all the bills.Wow. Mast may cost 18K$. Anyone got a serious quote? Andre, Scaramanga F25Thomas Carlton <Finesse@…> wrote:

It may be that the insurance companies have had bad experience with carbon fiber masts in conventionally stayed race boats which would have been designed with much lower safety margins than our big sticks.

I was thinking that too. We had a Santa Cruz 52 lose her rig in
surprisingly light conditions during an ocean race. Naturally we were
behind the S/C 52 and when we came upon them in our F-39 we hailed
and asked if they required any assistance. I was concerned about
injured crew. They yelled back that everything was OK, noone was
hurt, and that they’d like to borrow one of our masts.

Historically Freedom rigs are far less likely to fail than any
conventional stayed rig.

Later I found out that the S/C 52 lost the replacement rig as well.
