I’ve had my insurance agent looking for coverage for my 1986 F36 and he is finding that they want to exclude mast coverage or not write it at all. I’ve got loads of boating experience, no losses and sail in New England so these items are not the problem.

Has anyone else had this problem? I am currently insured with Boat/US and wonder how they would be in case of a claim.

I insured my F30 with Markel American through International Marine Insurance Services, 410-827-3757. No mast exclusion, higher agreed value than Boat US would offer, and premium went up $23 this year after all the hurricanes last year and a $6K lightning damage claim. I recommend them and my broker highly.

I use IMI also for my F33 . No problems or
exclusions.

Bill,
My understanding with Boat US was that I would be responsible for the
deductible, regardless of what was damaged. Now that you’ve brought
that up, though, I think I’ll give them a call.

I just received the renewal insurance policy for my '89 F36/38.
Annual premium is $1069 for $100000 property damage, 1000 deductible
and mast is covered. I’ve never had a claim so do not know how
customer friendly they are. This is with Travelers and the agent is
Gowrie, Barden and Brett in Westbrook CT. I have compared them with
Boat US several times and Travelers has always had a lower premium.
They also cover my dinghy and OB value of 4000 for no extra charge and
a $250 deductile.

I ran into the same problem a few years ago when I tried to change
insurance carriers. I had coverage thru West Marine, and despite a
several year track record with them and having 50 mile US coastal
coverage, I wasn’t insured for Hawaiin waters. I could accept that
they wouldn’t insure me past the 50 miles, but I was annoyed they
wouldn’t insure me when I got to Hawaii (from CA). I went thru a
broker to get new insurance and ran into the carbon fiber mast issue
you allude to in your post.

I ended up with Allstate as my carrier. The rate went down, and they
covered me in Hawaii. The carbon fiber masts were not an issue with them.

I’ve made no claims with them, and thus can’t comment on how they
would respond if I needed them.

Tom,

I had Boat US coverage on my old MacGregor 21. I got dismasted when a turnbuckle failed while on a mooring in choppy water. They declared the boat a total loss (book value was only $1200). and sent me a check for $800. Then I had to buy the boat back. Crazy, but that’s how it works, apparently. That cost me another $300. Then they told me that the policy was cancelled, and I should not bother to try to buy insurance from them again. A rigger fixed my boat, finally, for about $900. All because of a rigging failure I could have fixed myself with pieces bought at West Marine for maybe $200. Lesson learned. In addition, when it came time to insure my Freedom 40, I had to answer “yes” to the question, “have you ever had insurance cancelled?” leading to long explanations. I don’t say that this is unique to Boat US, but they were certainly not overly helpful.

Good Luck!
