Jib downhaul?

Posted by ajlorman (ajlorman@…>)

It was pretty windy on the Chesapeake on Saturday and we had a great
ride in my F-30. But when we headed in and I wanted to douse the
sails, I suddenly missed the roller furler on my old boat. My jib
won’t come down very well by itself and I didn’t want to send my son
forward since we don’t have jacklines yet. Has anyone installed a
downhaul on their F-30 jib and lead it back to the cockpit?

Many thanks.

My F-36 came with one. It works well enough even though the camber spar
sometimes gets caught two feet up preventing a full douse. Just a piece of
1/4" line tied into the head of the sail and run through a block at the stem
then back to cockpit.

My F 30 came with a downhaul the previous
owner had rigged up. It always seemed to jam unless I was headed directly
upwind. And the doused sail would need to be captured and restrained anyway.
I fiddled with it for a year and then took
it off. I find the best thing is to motor into the wind with the autopilot and
go forward and douse the jib then secure it (I have learned to double check
that the jib halyard can run free first)
I wonder…has anyone fit a roller
furler on a Freedom’s small self tending jib?
