Keel modification on Freedom 32

Posted by Dan (boutier2002@…>)

I,m considering a keel modification full keel 5’6" to 4ft wing keel.
Anyone have any information on this? Your help would be greatly
appriciated. Dan

I don’t know anything about about modifying a F32, but a few years back I read an article (I’m not sure where; Cruising World; Sail?) about the owner of a C&C who did what you’re proposing. He cut some portion of the keel off (with a chain saw!), had two lead wings cast and bolted and epoxied them to the keel, then faired, etc. Might be worth having a marine engineer/architect examine how much lead you need to add to maintain righting moment, etc.

KEEL CUT

Mars metal make fin shaped winglets to bolt through a cut off keel. Adds about 500 pounds. Not cheap !

Aside from cutting off part of the keel you may also chop the resale
value in half. If you plan to keep the boat long term it might be
worth it I suppose.

Shoal draught

Since 1975, I have been cruising on and off 5 months of the year in Florida and mostly in the Bahamas. I would not cruise in these waters in a boat with more than 5 foot draught. Not that you could’nt as I have, ( in limited places ) with 6 foot 6 in. I would pay EXTRA for a shoal draught F 32. Boats with more than 5 feet of depth are a hard sell in the south.
When there are 60 boats in an anchorage suitable for less than half that many , the only remaining spots are in shallow water.
