I was studing the pictures and papers edited by the group and it was possible to
know (throug pictures only and without details) a twin keeler modification. But
it was not possible know about date and place that modification started and
opinions about comparative perfomance vs the other models.
The same about carbon fiber and aluminium spars.
Any body would like to teach or lead me about? I belive it is possible to find
any document that I unable to find.
Thanks a lot
I would like some info about the Freedom 21.
I have found very little about the keel choices
Do they come with fixed or retractable keels
what is the best choice and which one is less of a problem
Does the retractable keel have a keel box in the cabin
how do you raise it up and down .
Thanks Ken
In the USA, TPI built a 3’9" draft fin keel version and a 2’ shoal
keel. UK built boats seem to have been built with the fin keel, dual
lifting keels and a rather interesting dual foil wing keel that I
believe might have been designed by warwick collins. More information
is available at the freedom21.info website. Check out the last item
on the documentation link.
I can only speek from a fin keel point of view, its a fixed keel.
Since it’s my first boat I don’t know if its better or worse, easier or
harder. All I know is my fin keel flys on the down wind and reach with
the spinnaker up, it doesn’t point worth a darn and its a whole lot of
fun.
Launching is quite exciting by yourself since you can’t back it into
the water, my technique is to tie a 80’ rope to the trailer then atacht
it to my hitch push it over the blocks while climbing up into the boat
while the trailer rolls down the ramp into the water. I learned that
from the guy I bought it from. I’ll try and post some action pictures
next week after I go sailing.

In the US there were two keel options (a cast iron fin keel drawing
3’0" or the fiberglass enclosed lead shoal keel drawing 2’) both are
fixed keels. You can find this by going to the www.fredom21.info
site and clicking on Documentation and then clicking Original Sales
Brochure.
The British built Freedom 21s had several other keel choices one of
which featured retractable fins. You can find info on the British
keels on the same Documentation tab. Click on the last link on the
page for that info and photos.
On US boats the sailing preformance is probably better for the fin
keel but the shoal keel does offer advantages for sallow inland lakes
and trailer sailing.

Hi Ken, and All,
To the best of my knowledge the Freedom 21 was never made
with any type of retractable keel or swing keel. That said, Freedom
Yachts USA made two versions, a shoal and a fin keel. The shoal keel
model also came with a tabernacle mast making it very easy to rig by
hand. It sits quite low on its trailer making it easy to launch and
retrieve and it makes a good camper on the road. It also sails poorly
upwind without a jib and makes lots of leeway.
The Fin keeler sits way up high on the trailer making ramp
launching a true challenge. The mast is keel stepped and cannot be easily
stepped by hand. The boat sails to windward quite well, even without a
jib, and makes very little leeway.
I understand that the British manufacturer made a version
with twin bilge keels so the boat can sit upright when the tides go out.
I’ve never seen or sailed this versi0on.
Hope this helps!
By the way, my fin keel Freedom 21 is still very much for
sail.

Hi Bob,
Most Shoal keel F-21s came with a hinged mast (tabernacle) from the
factory. In addition, Freedom provided infomation for conversion of
keel stepped mast to tabernacle.

Somewhere out there, is a blue print (I have it somewhere), or a tabernacle made for the carbon fiber mast. You cut the mast in half at the deck level, and epoxy it (the telescoping hinge mechanism) inside the two halves…once installed you merely pull a pin, and lift the top half up about a foot or so, and lay it down…sort of a telescoping hinge if you will. I’ve seen a similar design in a radio’s antennae…where it pulls up about 4 inches, and then is able to pivot. Naturally the mast step conversion only pivots one direction, toward aft…

Senior sailor Bob is remembering that the traditional definition of
a “tabernacle fitting” is for sailboat masts (with forestay and
shrouds) that are stepped on the cabin top (with support below).
In the case of the Freedom-21 hinged mast (also called “tabernacle
mast” by the Freedom designer and company) it is still an un-stayed
mast. This option was in the original documentation from Freedom for
shoal keel F-21s and has been discussed on this site for many years
including conversion instructions… The hinged portion is not at the
cabin top but well above. In fact some small stayed sailboats have a
hinge (called tabernacle) to facilitate mast lowering for
trailering. The Freedom 21 tabernacle mast’s lower portion is still
stepped below like the one piece carbon fiber mast.
In some of the posts regarding the hinged mast, difficulties of its
lowering and raising even with two guys were noted. Also, some
owners have experienced wearing problems with the hinged portion. One
owner even put epoxy in the worn out hinged joint. Problems probably
occur more with frequent hinge use.

The comissioning instructions show pictures of one man raising and
lowering the mast. The top of the mast is cropped out of the photos
and I am convinced there was a crane attached at the masthead. The
man in the photo is alot smaller than my 240 lbs and it took me and
another full sized man a lot of grunting to get the hinged mast up
back in July.

Hi all,
Yes, the hinged tabernacle mast which was standard on the shoal draft Freedom 21’s is something of an engineering miracle. There is a short keel stepped mast which sticks about 2 feet above the deck as I recall. It has a short hinged peice on top facing aft. You just fit the deck end of the mast over the hinged peice, push the mast vertical, then let it slip down over the 2 feet of fixed mast till it hits the deck. Amazing, but it works like that totally freestanding.
best,
Richard Meltz

I have rasied it by myself. Takes 2 or more to lower because it’s of balance. In the original setup manual it shows a man in a shirt and tie raising it by himself. Tie is optional.

Hi Ken, and All,
To the best of my knowledge the Freedom 21 was never made with
any
type of retractable keel or swing keel. That said, Freedom
Yachts
USA made two versions, a shoal and a fin keel. The shoal keel
model
also came with a tabernacle mast making it very easy to rig by
hand.
It sits quite low on its trailer making it easy to launch and
retrieve and it makes a good camper on the road. It also sails
poorly upwind without a jib and makes lots of leeway.
The Fin keeler sits way up high on the trailer making ramp
launching a true challenge. The mast is keel stepped and cannot
be
easily stepped by hand. The boat sails to windward quite well,
even
without a jib, and makes very little leeway.
I understand that the British manufacturer made a version with
twin
bilge keels so the boat can sit upright when the tides go out. I¢
ve
never seen or sailed this versi0on.
Hope this helps!
By the way, my fin keel Freedom 21 is still very much for sail.
