Chuck, where are you located? I worked for West Marine in Moorhead City, NC this past summer until January and lived in New Bern. I’ll be stopping on my way north.Chuck Bates <cgb323@…> wrote: The labor rate in Oriental NC is $64/hour. Oriental is on the ICW at the mouth of the Neuse river. Chuck Ahhh…imagining that

I live in Oriental. I have used the services of Sailcraft in Oriental and found them to be competent and relatively reasonable.Sward <swardfullsail@…> wrote: Chuck, where are you located? Chuck,
Good to see that your still active. Say hello to Cathy and the kids. For the group I had a new engine put in my 36/38 last year. Bay Shore Marine in Annapolis did the installation. Cost was around $5K for the installation. I’m happy with the work and after putting up with a “hard” starting engine when the temperature I’m more than pleased with the new engine. Even though it has glow plugs I’ve never used them even with temperatures in the low 30s. But, it’s nice to know as the engine gets older it will still start it cold weather.

San Francisco yards are up to nearly $100 per hour.
Might explain so many boats on the market. Between yards and slip rent
a lot of people are finding other hobbies.

Sad thing about this is, there are some good experienced small business people out there. But since they are not associated with or an employee of the marina they can not come in and do any work for you. Unless you take you boat to them, if the motor is running. So you are at the mercy of the marina and their pricing.

Jim,
Did you go with a Yanmar or another brand? Can you comment on how
the performace is between old and new?
Regards,
Van

Van,
Stayed with Yanmar - Upgraded with the replacement for the 3 GM-30 with the new 3YM30. The old engine was hard starting in cold weather. With one season, I’m happy with the new engine the performance and fuel consumption are about the same as the older engine except the 3YM starts right away even in cold ( low 30s) weather. The 3YM has glow plugs, but I haven’t had to use them.
