Larger alternator

Has anyone changed over to a larger alternator on a 3YM30? 100 maybe?

Sward,

I changed out the 55 amp Hitachi that is
standard with the 3GM30F for an 80 Amp Balmar. I chose the 80 because you
need to size the alternator to the max charge rate your batteries can
accept. I have one 8D AGM house and a Gp27 AGM starting battery but can
only charge one at a time off the engine.

I also added a three stage external
regulator, a battery monitor, and changed my 110vac charger to a Tru Charge 20
to accommodate the new AGM’s. I did not change the belt in any
way. The battery monitor really shows the effectiveness of the new system
and state of the batteries and how much each electrical appliance draws.

I run the refrig all day and night,
autopilot and instruments when sailing, stereo, TV and lights and anchor light
in evening and still have enough to easily start the engine off the house
battery in the morning.

Fred,

I’m curious: do you have a 3/8" or a 1/2" wide V-belt?

Thanks,
Michel

Sward— is this on a F32 – I was wondering if so how
an 8D would fit.
I am looking at 3 new batteries this Fall on my F32. Anybody
have recommendations. What kind of battery monitor did you install a Link?
Thanks

Hi Ron,

It’s a F32

When I bought the boat I had an 8D-just too big to handle. I ended up with 4 Trojan 105’s and 2 starter batteries.

I have the 2 starters under the setee-port side. The electric anchor windlass wires are there too. The T-105’s are under the stairs in the aft cabin. 3 fit in the compartment and the forth is set outside there against the wall. The door was removed and a shelf built above the battery and extra space between the cabinet and berth. I keep and extra battery box there with distilled water, funnel etc.

I also have 3-85 Watt solar panels so have a battery monitor display-MPPT 250 solar control mounted in the companionway stair area. I would like to have a link-but that’s another thing!!

I am currently having made new canvas with side curtains for protection from the cold on trips north and south in the spring and fall-it can be sooooo cold. I am also having a couple of panels of sun protection too that can be zipped in and out as can the side panels.

I also just bought a watermaker-not sure how that will be installed yet. I am also getting ready to buy a washdown pump for the anchor. I have hauled so many muddy, disgusting anchors and rodes. The last time, in Annapolis it had all kinds of growth on it and when it went in the locker the V-berth smelled really bad. I know that someone told about installing that a year or so ago. Just more money-more work…and living aboard and more wants keep growing “Life is a Reach, then you Jibe”

Hello Sward,

Thanks very much for your reply. At the moment we have two
SeaWorthy batteries (West I think) that came with the boat. We have just
replaced one since it didn’t seem to hold a charge with a NAPA marine
starting battery, 1000 cca.

So we have the starting battery on the # 1 Guest switch and
the other two on the #2 Guest switch for house use. I am wondering about any
issues in charging them in tandem in the BOTH setting which we usually do, either
from the engine or dockside 110V. Somewhere in the dim recesses of my mind is a
caveat about mixing batteries, although all ours are wet cells. I guess the
NAPA is the newer sealed wet cell technology that never needs topping up (??) –
new to me but if it works why not.

I am not sure of the alternator output on my Yanmar,
presumably the original set up – anyone know about this on the F32 ?

Also Sward how to you figure on setting up your deck
washdown – which thru hull? I am dead against more holes in the hull.

Do you live aboard year round? Lf so I admire you on a 32ft
boat – I have done it for years on a 42ft but……

Thanks for all input and suggestions
