Thinking about another Freedom, only smaller than last time.
To be honest I’ve been looking quite some time at other boats outside
the Freedom family since I’m trying to limit the expenditure but I’ve
been disappointed in what I’ve seen. I can’t believe the lack of basic
maintenance in so many boats. A while back there was a F-28 sloop down
south but I never had a chance to look at it.
I’m thinking it might be worth digging a bit deeper into the savings
account to get another Freedom.
Fairly experienced former 39 owner with cash. Further north the better
as far as location but anything on west coast is possible. No project
boats though unless they’re close to Portland.

Dave, I knew it! You could never let yourself be seduced into
buying something else then a Freedom. Your story about lack of
maintenance on non-Freedoms is just a pretext to get back to us!
I can’t help you find a boat, but I wish you good luck in finding
one.
What always struck me as odd, is the fact that Freedoms are much
more expensive on your West Coast. Wouldn’t it be worthwhile lugging
an East Coast Freedom over the Rockies?

Well actually Michel I did have an old Pearson Triton for a while up
in Puget Sound. We cruised it last summer and my wife was
unimpressed with the boat but loved the cruising. I could have spent
some money to make it more appealing to my wife and in hindsight I
wish I had just fixed it up and made it something she’d enjoy more.
I didn’t want to dump a bunch of money into an older boat that would
never be worth more than a certain amount. But I have been boatless
for quite some time, almost a year I guess. The Triton was a
delightful pocket cruiser.
The asking prices out here are higher than back east but I don’t
know if the boats really sell for anything close to the asking
price. I’ve seen Freedoms languish on the market for upwards of a
year or more when they’re priced too high.
As far as trucking a smaller Freedom cross country I don’t think it
would pencil out. The trip would be well in excess of 4000km and you
have decommisioning and recomissioning costs to consider. Delivery
expenses are “sunk funds.” The money does nothing to add to the
value or utility of the boat. On a larger Freedom with value over
$100K the figures might tilt in favor of the delivery depending on
what kind of deal you had on the boat.
One of those rare 24’s on a trailer would be kind of cool though.
You could drag one of those with a pickup and have a great time.
Those rarely ever seem to be on the market.
A tall rig centerboard 33 would catch my attention as would a nice
32. The working budget is more suited for a 28 or 30. I’m trying not
to spend much since we may try to take a year off to do some sailing
at some point in the not too distant future.
