Line Stoppers/Clutches (F32 Hoyt)

Posted by rbrown739 (bob.brown@…>)

For my F32 (Hoyt) I’m interested in installing a 2 level turning block
(6 sheeves) up by the mast in place of the original single level
turning block(3 sheeves) so that I can run my main sheet forward and
then back and also run my vang back. I’d be interested in any lessons
learned during this process and what people did for installing extra
line stoppers/clutches. It seems the real estate back by the current
stoppers is pretty crowded. Any pictures would be appreciated.

On a recent trip to Cuttyhunk I was surprised to find another F32
(Hoyt) anchored right in front of my boat. It was the S/V Grace from
Newport.

I’m having trouble getting to the photo section of our Yahoo site.
Anybody else having a problem?

Thanks,

Bob

As I have an F30, I can’t comment about real estate for additional line stoppers on a 32. But I did install a two level organizer and I’m quite pleased with it. I stacked two Spinlock T50/3s in place of the original Schaefer triple. I had to drill new holes, but the mounting block was reusable. The Spinlock organizers are surprisingly strong and quite reasonably priced.

A bit over a year ago I replaced the original turning blocks/line organizers on my Hoyt32 with double stacked units totaling 8 sheaves on each side. At the same time I replaced the original line stoppers on the cabin top with two custom made 6 gang rope/line clutches. these were all fabricated by Garhauer, quite reasonable, and have performed flawlessly. I prefer separate reefing lines for clew and tack, hence the need for the extra equipment.

I have an F-33 so also can’t comment on space. I also installed the spinlocks and am very happy. they resolved some chafe issues due to the height and narrow frame and work very well. Can now raise my mizzen without the winch.
The hardest part of installation was related to access via the headliner etc., drilling throught he backing plate and routing out balsa and epoxying and then redrilling. If I had just drilled new holes and not bothered with the balsa it would have been very easy.
I used Lewmar D-2 clutches to ensure the halyards could be released at full load without use of the winch. They work very well but are a bit large and heavy.

I did the same thing as Alan did in terms of cleaning out the balsa and replacing with epoxy, etc. As I had my headliner down for repairs anyhow, that wasn’t a problem. What I found interesting is that the original organizer was caulked with silicone. These days, the only suggested uses for silicone on a boat are around certain kinds of plastics. Yet the 17 year old silicone on my organizer held and didn’t leak at all; the headliner showed no sign of leakage ever and the core was dry (even though I replaced it anyhow).

I’ve found the same that silicone was used for everything I’ve found so far including the throughbolted lifeline stanchions. In general the silicone was quite thick and held well and only in a few places have I found seepage or wet balsa. Howver it makes me uncomfortable not having the epoxy.

Ditto to everything you said. I did find water intrusion when I installed a new diesel deck fill and around the bolt holes in the hinges on the cockpit lazarette lid.

The deck fills are on my list to take out and epoxy although I don’t see anything or find anything with the moisture meter at this point.
