Looking for Freedom 21 in the midwest

Posted by flametop62 (towers@…>)

I’m in the market for a shoal draft Freedom 21. If you know of one for
sale in the upper midwest, please let me know. Also, does anyone use a
furler instead of the luff wire jib? Is there a reason not to?

Hi, Take a look at my 83 shallow draft F21. If you are
interested, we can probably arrange for me to deliver
her to you. Let me know where you are and how soon you
would want delivery. I am in Arkansas. I’m asking
$4900 with practically new trailer and a 7.5 electric
start Mercury. I have the main and geona. She is
rigged for the gunmount spinnaker but I do not have
the spinnaker. You can contact me at 501-915-0068 or
email at carlandsue@… See pictures at the
following link.

I will be glad to email additional pictures. Roller
furling works fine on a jib.

I might be interesting in selling my F-21 in order to buy a F-25. I’ll send you
some pix if you want. I’m located in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. The boat has a
Shoreland’r trailer.

I have not decided what I might want to replace mine with yet - but I
will probably step up soon maybe another Freedom or a J30 if I can
find a good one w/o delamination.

The boat is in Bayfield Wisconsin - come up and try it. It has
stancions/rails all the way around - spinnaker etc. I don;t have
pictures on the web today but that can be fixed.

I just made a huge improvement to the rudder by applying some new
research findings - it sails a lot better. If I keep it, the keel will
be next.

The boat has never been painted (the factory paints the cockpit) so
you will be able to see every little nick I have fixed (properly).

It is the newer version with real ports (windows) from '86 and they
have not been alloved to leak so the boat does not have the common
delamination prolems you see with the plastic panel along the house
design. I have fixed a few small blisters in the keel, again nothing
of consequence since I have checked it every year since '86 and fixed
them right away.

Now to your question about the Jib

The only reason you add a Jib is for light air and to improve your
sails leading edge to windward compared to the main with the thick mast.

Putting the Jib on a roller is counter productive as it will be less
effective and even less usefull whenever it is rolled - the J is only
about 6 feet. However you can easily make a shute/sock for it just
like the one for the Spinnaker if you add a seperate full time Jib
Halyard like some has done. I wouldn’t waste time on more than one Jib.

In over 10 MPH wind you will have to start thinking about reefing soon
even with the small 100% jib so the jib is only helpfull in very light
air. The 140% ?? class Jib/Genny even more so.

If you let the shoal draf F21 heal too much the keel will end up
hardly any deeper than the hull and it will be of little use. The boat
sails extremely well heeled at around 15 degrees - after that you will
have too much leeway to make decent progress. Another reason not to
over-canvas.

I finally broke down and bought mine a Jib for her 18th birthday -
that is how much you need them. It too hot to sail slowly in the
midsummer anyway - that is when you use the motor to get to the beach
right away.

The shoaldraft boat is a cruiser not a racer, but it is a blast
none-the-less just without the stres. Last fall a 30+ foot racer
changed couse and sailed the long way around me going hard on the wind
in 3 foot wawes - it would probably have taken him long enough to pass
me that I could have struck up a conversdation with his girldfriend
while he commandered his crew around - since my little boat was
sailing herself at over 5 knots to windward while I was free to do
whatever. (OK so his raising sails were overpowered)

Note walking around shifts the weight on a boat this size and that
will stear the boat so you have to watch it - although once in a
steady wind I sat on the bow pulpit for 15 minutes enjoying the fall
colors on lake Peppin - But remember your lifeline unless you swim
really well because the boat will keep going without you as long as
the wind holds up. I might spend on an autopilot now that I am on
superior though because it cannot sail itself off the wind.

Anyway, I am serious come and try it. I hope to be in the water by the
end of the month.

I don’tcheck the Yahoo e-mail often - I can send my real one later if
you are interested.
