LPG detector test/failure

Posted by William A. Cormack (wacormack@…>)

My 1986 Freedom 36 came to me with an LPG gas detector installed. This weekend I decided to test it. When I turned the control knob to test the warning went off indicating it was ok. Next I took a 32 oz cardboard cup (McDonalds if you must know), nipped off a notch in the edge to fit over the wire to the sensor and cut a slit in the side. I then held it tight over the sensor, pushed the end of my propane torch into the slit and turned it on for a few seconds. I held the cup over the sensor for about a minute while listening for the alarm. There was no alarm. I removed the cup, lifted it to my nose where I got a whiff of propane then brought the cup outside the boat. The temperature inside the boat was about 50 degrees and the outside temp about 40. I turned of the electric heater during the test.

Can anyone verify if my test procedure was OK and or suggest an alternative?

Thanks.

Bill
