After several attempts at manually starting my 2QM15 Yanmar while on
the bench (both by myself and a couple of others) I have come to the
conclusion that it is physically impossible (at least without steroids)
The engine revolutions stop very abrubtly once the decompression lever
is released…remember this is on the bench where we were able to
get real purchase and in a standing position…I can’t even imagine
attempting it on my hands and knees in the confines of the companionway.
Is manual starting a myth or am I missing a trick?

I have a 2qm15 in my other boat in Canada. Hand cranking is a myth on that engine. Many have tried, I cannot not hand start my 1gm on Scaramanga either. I, however could easily hand crank my Volvo 2 cyl 23 hp quite easily. The secret is the huge HEAVY flywheel. My 3 cyl Volvo Penta 2030 had a three-position decompression lever.
Full compression, full decompression and the magic 1 cylinder
compression, 2 cylinders decompression. The idea is that the engine
will start on one cylinder and then has enough torque to turn over
the two other cylinders. Judging from the wear and tear on the
handle and pins, it has been started by hands many times. Perhaps
your engine has a similar feature?
good luck,
michel

this is probably more in fun than in reality, but here’s an
