Hi Everyone,
I put the boat in today and attempted to use the mast hoist designed
by Wilfred. I made the hoist last winter and posted some photos on the
site. The “spars” or legs of the hoist are supposed to be 16 feet.
When I went to the lumber yard all they had was 14’. Not enough. The
thing will work, but you need the extra two feet to get the mast high
enough to drop in the hole. And he’s right about it being a little
scary at first. So, I gave up and went to the gantry and hoisted the
mast. Secondly, I’m not sure I could have hoisted the mast alone.
Lastly, I’d recommend a real pulley system, not a castaway
boom vang. As I was trying to haul the mast up, standing 8 or 9 feet
up in the air as the boat sat on the trialer, I tried to figure the
cost to replace should something go wrong. The mast is probably worth
more than the boat.

Hi Allen,
Sorry that you were unable to use the hoist rig that I proposed - you are quite right Allen - 16ft leg length is mandatory for the sheer leg length - its just a matter of geometry & there it is. Regarding the need for a “real” pulley set-up - I’m a bit puzzled at this since yachting blocks are surely designed to take “real” loads and since your USA carbon masts are so very light what’s the problem with pulleys from the spares box. If professionally made yaching blocks break at 85lb load we are all lin trouble - really. My system hoists the 85lb plus UK aluminium alloy mast without any problem whatsoever. Sorry that you made the rig to the wrong length.
My advice remains - make the rig to the drawing - follow the instructions and avoid paying any yard hoisting fees. An additional factor of course is that you may be in a place where no gantry is available so self reliance is a necessity not a luxury. I would not want Allen’s unfotrunate experience to put anyone off using the F21 mast hoist rig - it does work.
