Mast Painting

Posted by reedjayt2004 (reedjayt@…>)

I had the mast on my 1994 Freedom 35 pulled this year. The paint or
gell on the mast was chalky and the mast was mared is spots. We are
planning on having the mast painted. The rigger has recommended
removing all the hardware on the mast, painting it with awlgrip and
reinstalling all the hardware using the same type of connectors
currently being used.

Has anyone had this type of work done, or removed and replaced any
hardware on the mast?

I did all of the above on both masts.

Filling and sanding the horizontal cracks was a lot of work. Use
flexible fillers and Awlgrip with a flexible hardener, otherwise your
mast will develop cracks again. I had them professionally spray
painted in two layers of undercoat and two layers of white Awlgrip.

I took off most fittings and used the original fixing techniques, that
is a mix of stainless rivets and machine screws in tapped holes. I put
on some more hardware, a radar reflector with rivets, some deadeyes
and a cleat with tapped holes, machine screws and Loctite.

Good luck.

Michel

Hope you get some wise and experienced commentators about this question. The new owner of my F30 was concerned about the chaulking on our CF mast…but Paul Dennis suggested polished and waxing first… which he did. Now the mast looks wonderful, chaulking gone. Still a few chaffed spots from rigging…but otherwise all is well. Removing track and all fittings leads to a big project…replacing them. Must be done very carefully with just the right equipment, parts and touch. Primer and finish must be very flexible because the surface of the mast stretches and compressing a lot when the mast bends. Good luck…Fargoreedjayt2004 <reedjayt@…> wrote: I had the mast on my 1994 Freedom 35 pulled this year. The paint or gell on the mast was chalky and the mast was mared is spots. Fargo,
A neat trick for getting hardware back in it’s proper places is
taking pictures of each area. Label the pictures to ease in IDing the
area later. Box/box the bits and label each of these also.

but Paul Dennis suggested polished and waxing first… Is there any particular products or techniques that he used? I have some chipping paint and am wondering if a repaint is necessary or just polishing/waxing.

Keep in mind that it will be next to impossible to ever paint your
mast after you used silicone wax on it. Sanding does not help,
because you spread the silicone remnants with your sandpaper and
thereby fill all the tiny holes and cracks with silicone.

So if you use wax, use beeswax or carnauba, which you can remove
with a solvent.

Silicone can be removed. Auto painting supply houses have a solvent for (repeatedly) wiping down the surface. to remove silicones. It will work, but it takes time and effort.
