First - Clyde, I’m in Portland, Maine.
Went and checked out a Freedom 21, hull 204. Gunmount spinnaker is
there, but spinnaker itself is torn in several places. Current owner
(70+ yrs. old) has only owned it for about a year and never used it
for fear of falling overboard, so I don’t believe he really knew how
it operates.
I was more concerned about the mast, which he had never pulled.
There are horizontal hairline cracks its whole length. Are those a
common result of the bending or ageing in a carbon fiber mast, or
something to be concerned about?
Also, current owner says the previous owner “did not like the
clunking of the hinged joint”, so put a heavy aluminum sleeve in the
boat that extends 18 or so inches above and below the deck. Has
anyone reading this forum seen such an arrangement? Will send photo
if you’re interested. To transport it, I believe I’ll have to pull
the mast out to lay it down. Am I right?
There was no evidence of stains on the undersides of fittings, so
that seemed ok. No stern pulpits - does anyone have plans for same?
It was clear that the boat had not been maintained properly, so it
will take some work and $ to bring it back, and it also lacks a
trailer. Anyone in the northeast US have one for a shoal keel they
want to get rid of?

I trust some of the more experienced F-21 sailors will chime in, but
it’s my impression from previous correspondence that horizontal craze
lines on the mast are of no consequence at all.

Hey Carl, have a 1984 F21 forsale, in excellent shape. Has the
standard 3.9 keel, not a shoal draft. Been in indoor storage most
of it’s life. let me know if you are interested. Thanks
