Mast stability

Owner of Freedom 32 - The mast makes an annoying creaking sound when at
anchor in choppy seas. Does it have to have wooden blocks installed to
keep it from moving?

No- They are polyurethane. check to see the poly mast wedges are tight.

He might be talking about the noise made by the mast creaking on the
mast step.
This problem has come up year after year on this BB.
I cured the problem on my boat when I last pulled the mast by
squirting a bead of silicon on the step just before dropping the mast
the last foot or so before restepping it. On a 32 (I understand) you
might have to be careful not to plug a drainage hole when doing this.
However, on a 36 there is no drainage hole at that location – at
least not on my boat.

I accept it as part of sailing a freedom. Its almost
reassuring these days when sailing the SF Bay. Yep,
the mast is creaking, all is well with the world.

Same thing with the sole. You drop stuff and get
dings, each one has its own character and story.

That one happened when my son dropped the winch
handle…God was I pissed… and that other one
happened when I dropped the screwdriver while I was
replacing the headliner. Ahem, a reasonable mistake by
a master shipwright. All the while silently chuckling
at the many silly things that have happened over the
years.

Good and bad memories are imbedded in my boat’s
defects I refuse to erase them unless they compromise
safety (or render me irretrievably un-bristol like)

I had a problem with my main rotating slightly that caused some rubbing/wear both to the base of the mast and next to the collar. If that’s what cause the creaking its a bad thing. I now have spartited at the collar at the cabin top and have wooden wedges at the base along with fiberglass reinforcing around the holes for the set screws/pins at the base that go through the aluminum collar.
So far so good.
