On the Freedom 36/38s it seems that mast was tilted back maybe 5 deg
aft around 89’ and models after. Does anyone know the reason this was
done? What affect (positive or neg) did this modification have?

In general, mast rake improves the pointing ability of a boat by
moving the center of effort aft. I used to race on a Pearson Wanderer
with a considerably raked mast, and it pointed much better than
a ‘stock’ Wanderer… in fact better than quite a number of other boats
in her class.
The tradeoff is that by moving the ce behind the clr, you also
increase weather helm.
