I hesitate to tell you this, but in the Kinks’ song, Lola was a man.

This is how my 39 Express got it’s name.
It’s a story with a happy ending.
My second wife Debbie, had Cystic Fibrosis and pasted away March
20,1983. I am very lucky to have her love. One sentence I wrote the
night she died was that “we are all here for one wink of eternity”
[it’s about your soul].
In 1993 I found Wink which had been named Sunshine Girl by the
original owner and not changed by the second owner who I bought the
boat from. Not being, and still not superstitious I changed the name
to Wink with no fanfare. Three weeks after having Wink on it’s
mooring she was broken into, ransacked and sunk by someone pulling
the knotmeter transducer. Wink was totally rebuilt at considerable
time and expense and has been a joy ever since. Is there a risk in
changing a name. I for one don’t think there is a connection, do you?
Rita and I will be married 24 years this coming April and although
she never met Debbie there is a strong connection between them. I’m a
very lucky guy.
Sorry if this is all to sappy, but I had to tell the story once I saw
the boat name subject as this will always be a very special day for
me.

Great story!! There is a risk of change the boat name without the proper
fanfare! In my response in several email back I mentioned that I would perform
the proper ceremony as defined by Capt. Pat. If you still have or search for
that email the article is very interest and funny but I will keep the
appropriate spirits away. If you can not find it I will send it out tonight
when I get home.

I’m not a superstitious kind of guy either, but I figured why tempt
Neptune especially when the ceremony involves me getting to drink some
of the “libations” I share with the gods of the seas? When we renamed
the boat we got from Fargo, we did the whole 9 yards of de-naming /
re-naming, and made a party out of it with 12 other friends (not all
on my F30 by the way) rafted out on the Pamlico Sound, with drinking
going on before, during and after the official ceremony.
So was John’s story just a coincidence… only Neptune knows for sure!

Rick, tell me about the rules on the celebration of a new name. My boat has no name painted on. On the survey it said Sassy…must have been the old name. Thanks Lola 30Rick Higgens <higgens@…> wrote: I’m not a superstitious kind of guy either, but I figured why tempt Neptune especially when the ceremony involves me getting to drink some of the “libations” I share with the gods of the seas? I renamed my boat. I thought it should be something that was meaningful to me not the previous owner. I named her “Dream On” as I think owning her and cruising on her is the continuation of my dreams to sail to the Bahama’s, Carribean or off into the sunset, or where ever the wind blows for new adventures. I used the John Vigor ceremony of denaming and renaming. It was very fun. He says buy good champagne, but don’t break the bank or cruising kitty, and be sure to buy 2-one for the boat and one for you! I did enjoy the second one. It was silly, but fun.Lola Jackson <lolaltd@…> wrote: Rick, tell me about the rules on the celebration of a new name. My boat has no name painted on.
