Glad to find this group as a new 21 owner. I bought this boat and have
never owned a sailboat, but have had many powerboats and have been a
marine technician (fancy name for boat mechanic) for 35 yrs. I think I
got a good deal, but someone may tell me otherwise. I paid 1000. It
came with a main sail and 2 jib sails, a 15 Tohatsu, a MightyMite
motor, a trailer, solar panel, VHF, inverter system and I would guess
everything needed to sail it, as it was in the water till about August
last year. Bottom is a little rough, with slight barnacles and algae. I
believe a little scraping and a good pressure wash will clean it right
up. My intentions are to enjoy it for a while, then sell it.
My problem is I do not know the first thing about rigging or sailing
this vessel. So many lines, such little knowlege! I have been to Max’s
site and retrieved what documentation I found, but I just am not
familiar enough with all these sailing terms for all the rigging lines
etc. to make much sense of it all. Aside from trying to get the
previous owner to assist (he is moving soon and busy)this forum seems
my next best bet. Also I’m located near Gainesville FL, so I might be
interested in paying for some help if needed. Can anyone steer me in
the right direction for some direction?

By looking at or unpacking the sails, how can I tell the difference
between a jib and spinnaker, -not on the water and mast lowered?

Spinnaker will be large, light, colorful and symmetrical measuring about 12’ across the foot between the 2 clews.
Jibs are white, triangular heavier material and have a tack, head and clew (where the sheets attach).
I suggest you do a little research online to learn basic sailing terminology.
Hang around boatyards, join a sailing club, ask lots of questions…you will learn!
Then you will have a lot of fun with this boat (though a 15 hp outboard is too heavy - get an 8hp!)

I agree with Sean.These are not original sails.That doesn’t mean you can’t sail with them.I am using a jib from a lightning class sailboat and it works just fine.I think some of our members might have some used sails if you choose to change your sails. I am pleased to see the condition of your boat/trailer when you
consider what you paid. Make sure you post some pics of the
interior, too. You got a great deal. I got mine with a broken mast
and ended up having to buy a SECOND boat to complete the first one.
That being said, I have an “extra” boom and original mainsail. I’m
in D.C. but, would be able to save you a lot compared to a sail
maker/broker.
