New home for Freedom Owners forum, Join it and be a founder member

Hi all

As a freedom owner I have to recognize that the activity in this group has
been more than interesting in the last few months, specially when it comes
to sharing experiences of other users. I’ve really learned so much.

I have noticed however that, it is somewhat hard to follow up on particular
issues since they all come via email or are stored in the web both on a
separate way each reply from the other, as well as it is not easy to post
images and other interesting things.

To make a long story short a few weeks back I decided to offer my small
contribution to the Freedom owners and set up a new site forum for Freedom
lovers, owners, so that we could all have some more services and easy of
use. If the initiative goes well and we all suport it with our comments,
we will all have an interesting place to visit soon.

For example the forum will accept images on the threads, each thread may
be viewed with all it’s all answers on a single place, each user may post
photos, classifieds, wheather info, and many more.

The site is currently working, I am doing a lot of changes in my free time
to improve it but would like to have your feedback and help if possible,
the idea is that the site wold be a place for Freedom Users to come and
share.

I extend an invitation to anyone who wants to help so that we’ll soon have a
nice site, remember this kind of sites are more interesting if more people
comes in, so let your friends know of it please (there is a place for non
freedom users too).

Also, the current moderator of the group at yahoo is welcome to be a
moderator in this new site, just let me know to mfeoli@…, also any
one else who thinks can take a few minutes a day and want’s to help can ask
to be a moderator.

TIP:
the site is VERY MUCH better if viewed by a registered user, unregistered
users will only see parts of it, (for example wont see wheather block and
others) so sign up quickly,

The site has almost no users now we are planning to register as Founder’s to
the first 10 to 20 users signed in, for whatever benefit that could be in
the future.

I’m looking into ways of porting all that valuable information of the yahoo
forum to set it up on a common knoledge section on the site, if anyone has
the previous forum backups that could be of great help too.

Hope this initiative does good to all

Ok, I joined. But please explain what you expect to accomplish by starting
a new forum. The down side of it is that, at least for a while, there will
be two and less active users will send inquiries to the old one and not get
responses. Is Yahoo co-operating in this and going to redirect to the new
site?

Personally I would love to see the Freedom forum moved to a
different platform as I’ve always hated the navigation within Yahoo
groups. It’s awful compared to other systems out there. I really
dislike the on-line and e-mail based advertisements.

That being said, I also hate the fact the people keep moving this
forum to alternate locations/systems without any discussion. It’s
always after the fact. I would much rather have a discussion amoung
interested members to decide if there’s a need to move, what
features are needed, the logistics to move all of the old
information, inform everybody well in advance, freeze the old forum,
migrate to a new one and then go from there. This unilateral
decision and unplanned move doesn’t work well in my book.

I’m not saying yeah or nay to the new server. I simply suggest that
we have this discussion and then decide.

Hi all,

I agree on what you all say and we should discuss it, this is not a forced
situation of change it is an opportunity, I’m offering a new possibilty
which may give new features in a near future, better ways to handle
information for searching, more than just redirecting each others emails as
yahoo currently does.

As Also offer to study the way to include the data of the present forum and
the past forum to have it all on a single server, which by the way right
now it is extremelly hard to search unless you go post by post without any
threading at all.

I’m sorry I didn’t bring into discussion before I’m bringing it now, I
wanted the site to be at least functional.

If after a discussion among interested turns out not to be an option for
replacement, no problem, I don’t have any other particular interest but
having a nice place to pop in and more features so to share photos graphics
and ideas, having a place for the users to advertise things freely, an easy
way to search for old discussions and see News about general sailing
activity, all of these as people in Hunter, Jeaneau, Catalina and many
others do.

but then …
shouldn’t it be a good opportunity to take?, it is there, I took the time
to build it and it is rather easy for me to change it into something else to
solve someone’s else’s need, but I think at least some discussion about it
won’t do any harm to anyone.

Let’s do some brain storming

Hi all ! I’ll join anything Freedom-related. I
mistakenly joined the “other” Freedom discussion list,
but now that one has seemingly petered out on its own.
Am getting about one message per month. So I say, let
market economics prevail!

And thanks to you, Manrique, for taking some time to
try to improve the searching and posting (pix)
abilities. I have about 900 Freedom messages right
now. Backlogged because there are a few critical gems
of “been there, done that, suggest you guys try it
THIS way if you do it…” that I’m scared to delete.
On the other hand, the weekends have been much too
nice to sit home and go through them all, so…

If we were searchable, that would be great. I’m
joining. If it takes, that’s great, too. Meantime, I
just keep subscribing to anything Freedom, and pay the
most attention to whatever is turning up most chat.
But I read it all. All the best. Happy T-Day,
everyone. Yours in peace, and in support of ingenuity.

I applaud your willingness to help improve Freedom owner resources.
However I think it is best to leave the site where it is.
First, the key is having a single site with the most active members.
As I understand it Freedom Yachts links to the yahoo site and most
search engines find this.
Second, it is best not rely on a single owners intereste and
continuing generosity in maintaining/administering the site. Yahoo
does a good job, is stable and the ads are to me a minor nuisance in
exchange for a free site with no fee so there is little barrier to
join.
Now if someone wanted to spend the time going though the messages in
the archives and current ones and grouping them into a manual for
posting on the database…
My two cents anyway.

I agree with Al. Switching sites is no fun.

In addition, you can search the yahoo site. At the bottom of the opening
page at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freedomyachts2003/ enter what you want
to find in the search window and hit search. It searches the text of
messages as well as the subjects.

You are right Bill, I could fix this since I’m in the process of building
the site, but… , I kind of agree with your reasons (and others too).

been the developper of the new site, I really don’t mind if IT IS or IT IS
NOT chosen to be THE official home, I really thought originally I could
help the “community” with some extra services, most of them still to come
since I launched the site in a somewhat early stage of development,
The original idea was of this being the first step to, passed some time and
gathering and waking up more users, create a “Freedom Boat Owners
Association”, in which case I would donate the name and the site to the
association… , (or have a new domain name for the association and keep
all the work of this site and just modify it to the new name).

But I tell you what, this kind of things are born naturally or not at all,
I’ll keep the new site up as an extra services source for whoever needs it
either Freedom user or not, I would personally feel less commited anyway
since now would be a personal project more than a “property” the group, and
we can all keep posting on the yahoo site as we have been doing for the last
year or so.

As a personal thing I’ll try to take some of my time to build interesting
features on the site (as long as doesn’t interfere with my sailing time of
course), like following up Ocean Racers, and circumnavigators and, if
possible, have private sponsors to organize events to users of Freedom,
Hunter, divers or whatever the new orientation of the site is.

I’ll keep the yahoo Freedom mailing list posted of new features in case
anyone would like to to pop in at www.SailorsPub.com . By the way thanks
to the ones that kindly registered.

I’m still open for anyone’s help, advices or very gentle criticisms, if
anyone wants to join this “now new” project of developing a sailing portal
at www.SailorsPub.com .

regards to all

Manrique

I believe that Manrique’s idea of using the new web site as the first step toward a Freedom owners association is a good one, whether or not the site takes off. My Freedom 30 is my third boat and the first which did not have at least one owners group associated with it. It seems to me that an owners group is especially important when the builder (although not all of its employees) has essentially abandoned the owners. There are about a thousand Nonsuchs out there, and about 70 percent belong the International Nonsuch Association. I used to think that those who were independent enough to own a boat with an unstayed mast were too independent to join an association, but the INA proves me wrong (unless there’s a metaphysical difference between aluminum and carbon fiber). Besides the help it could provide all of us, an active owners association can help maintain the value of out of production boats.

I would support the idea of an owners association. I would not rush
to a non-funded single owner administered website/bulletin board.
Do you know what the membership fees and services provided by the
nonsuch association are?

active owners association can help maintain the value of out of

You are right Bill, I could fix this since I’m in the process of
building
the site, but… , I kind of agree with your reasons (and others
too).

been the developper of the new site, I really don’t mind if IT IS
or IT IS
NOT chosen to be THE official home, I really thought originally I
could
help the “community” with some extra services, most of them still
to come
since I launched the site in a somewhat early stage of development,
The original idea was of this being the first step to, passed some
time and
gathering and waking up more users, create a “Freedom Boat Owners
Association”, in which case I would donate the name and the site
to the
association… , (or have a new domain name for the association
and keep
all the work of this site and just modify it to the new name).

But I tell you what, this kind of things are born naturally or not
at all,
I’ll keep the new site up as an extra services source for whoever
needs it
either Freedom user or not, I would personally feel less commited
anyway
since now would be a personal project more than a “property” the
group, and
we can all keep posting on the yahoo site as we have been doing
for the last
year or so.

As a personal thing I’ll try to take some of my time to build
interesting
features on the site (as long as doesn’t interfere with my sailing
time of
course), like following up Ocean Racers, and circumnavigators
and, if
possible, have private sponsors to organize events to users of
Freedom,
Hunter, divers or whatever the new orientation of the site is.

I’ll keep the yahoo Freedom mailing list posted of new features in
case
anyone would like to to pop in at www.SailorsPub.com . By the
way thanks
to the ones that kindly registered.

I’m still open for anyone’s help, advices or very gentle
criticisms, if
anyone wants to join this “now new” project of developing a
sailing portal
at www.SailorsPub.com .

regards to all

Manrique

I’m not sure of the advantages either but do know of a
disadvantage. You
have to click on a link and wait for a page to load in order to

Call me an old Yankee if you will but:

You can also follow threads; just click on threads at the upper
or
lower right hand side of the screen to sort messages by threads
rather
than date.

I am not sure of the advantages of the new site.

I applaud your willingness to help improve Freedom owner
resources.
However I think it is best to leave the site where it is.
First, the key is having a single site with the most active
members.
As I understand it Freedom Yachts links to the yahoo site and
most
search engines find this.
Second, it is best not rely on a single owners intereste and
continuing generosity in maintaining/administering the site.
Yahoo
does a good job, is stable and the ads are to me a minor
nuisance in
exchange for a free site with no fee so there is little
barrier to
join.
Now if someone wanted to spend the time going though the
messages in
the archives and current ones and grouping them into a manual
for
posting on the database…
My two cents anyway.

Hi all

As a freedom owner I have to recognize that the activity in
this
group has
been more than interesting in the last few months,
specially when
it comes
to sharing experiences of other users. I’ve really learned
so
much.

I have noticed however that, it is somewhat hard to follow
up on
particular
issues since they all come via email or are stored in the
web both
on a
separate way each reply from the other, as well as it is
not easy
to post
images and other interesting things.

To make a long story short a few weeks back I decided to
offer my
small
contribution to the Freedom owners and set up a new site
forum for
Freedom
lovers, owners, so that we could all have some more services
and
easy of
use. If the initiative goes well and we all suport it with
our
comments,
we will all have an interesting place to visit soon.

For example the forum will accept images on the threads,
each
thread may
be viewed with all it’s all answers on a single place, each
user
may post
photos, classifieds, wheather info, and many more.

The site is currently working, I am doing a lot of changes
in my
free time
to improve it but would like to have your feedback and help
if
possible,
the idea is that the site wold be a place for Freedom Users
to
come and
share.

I extend an invitation to anyone who wants to help so that
we’ll
soon have a
nice site, remember this kind of sites are more interesting
if
more people
comes in, so let your friends know of it please (there is a
place for non
freedom users too).

Also, the current moderator of the group at yahoo is
welcome to
be a
moderator in this new site, just let me know to mfeoli@y…,
also any
one else who thinks can take a few minutes a day and want’s
to
help can ask
to be a moderator.

TIP:
the site is VERY MUCH better if viewed by a registered user,
unregistered
users will only see parts of it, (for example wont see
wheather
block and
others) so sign up quickly,

The site has almost no users now we are planning to register
as
Founder’s to
the first 10 to 20 users signed in, for whatever benefit
that
could be in
the future.

well too much talk… to visit the site:
www.sailorspub.com

I’m looking into ways of porting all that valuable
information of
the yahoo
forum to set it up on a common knoledge section on the
site, if
anyone has
the previous forum backups that could be of great help too.

Hope this initiative does good to all

Dues at the International Nonsuch Association are $40 a year. There are also local Nonsuch organizations. The INA is one of the more structured (perhaps even rigid) owners groups I’ve come across, but it does provide a lot to its members. Have a look at their web site www.nonsuch.org to see what you get for the money.

I would also support the idea of an owners
association. Would lead potentially to even better communication among members,
more resources, we could post a lot more stuff, and ultimately it should help
the value of our boats. Freedom’s are a tuff sell on the front end until
you get in deep to what the boats represent. It could help us get people over
those initial concerns. It would be a lot of work to organize probably

International Nonsuch Association. I used to
think that those who
were independent enough to own a boat with an
unstayed mast were too
independent to join an association, but the INA
proves me wrong
(unless there’s a metaphysical difference between
aluminum and
carbon fiber). Besides the help it could
provide all of us, an
active owners association can help maintain the
value of out of
production boats.

You are right Bill, I could fix this
since I’m in the process of
building
the site, but… , I kind of agree
with your reasons (and others
too).

been the developper of the new site, I
really don’t mind if IT IS
or IT IS
NOT chosen to be THE official home, I
really thought originally I
could
help the “community” with some
extra services, most of them still
to come
since I launched the site in a somewhat early
stage of development,
The original idea was of this being the first
step to, passed some
time and
gathering and waking up more users, create a
“Freedom Boat Owners
Association”, in which case I
would donate the name and the site
to the
association… , (or have a new domain
name for the association
and keep
all the work of this site and just modify it
to the new name).

But I tell you what, this kind of things are
born naturally or not
at all,
I’ll keep the new site up as an extra
services source for whoever
needs it
either Freedom user or not, I would
personally feel less commited
anyway
since now would be a personal project more
than a “property” the
group, and
we can all keep posting on the yahoo site as
we have been doing
for the last
year or so.

As a personal thing I’ll try to take some of
my time to build
interesting
features on the site (as long as doesn’t
interfere with my sailing
time of
course), like following up Ocean
Racers, and circumnavigators
and, if
possible, have private sponsors to
organize events to users of
Freedom,
Hunter, divers or whatever the new
orientation of the site is.

I’ll keep the yahoo Freedom mailing list
posted of new features in
case
anyone would like to to pop in at
www.SailorsPub.com . By the
way thanks
to the ones that kindly registered.

I’m still open for anyone’s help, advices or
very gentle
criticisms, if
anyone wants to join this “now new”
project of developing a
sailing portal
at www.SailorsPub.com .

regards to all

Manrique

I’m not sure of the advantages either but do
know of a
disadvantage. You
have to click on a link and wait for a page

see the

doing this.

Call me an old Yankee if you will but:

I vote to keep the same (old) way.

You can also follow threads; just click
on threads at the upper

lower right hand side of the screen to
sort messages by threads
rather
than date.

I am not sure of the advantages of the
new site.

I applaud your willingness to
help improve Freedom owner
resources.
However I think it is best to
leave the site where it is.
First, the key is having a
single site with the most active
members.
As I understand it Freedom
Yachts links to the yahoo site and
most
search engines find this.
Second, it is best not rely on
a single owners intereste and
continuing generosity in
maintaining/administering the site.
Yahoo
does a good job, is stable and
the ads are to me a minor
nuisance in
exchange for a free site with
no fee so there is little
barrier to
join.
Now if someone wanted to spend
the time going though the
messages in
the archives and current ones
and grouping them into a manual
for
posting on the database…
My two cents anyway.

so
much.

I have noticed however
that, it is somewhat hard to follow
up on
particular
issues since they all come
via email or are stored in the
web both
on a
separate way each reply
from the other, as well as it is
not easy
to post
images and other
interesting things.

To make a long story
short a few weeks back I decided to
offer my
small
contribution to the Freedom
owners and set up a new site
forum for
Freedom
lovers, owners, so that we
could all have some more services
and
easy of
use. If the
initiative goes well and we all suport it with
our
comments,
we will all have an
interesting place to visit soon.

For example the forum will
accept images on the threads,
each
thread may
be viewed with all it’s all
answers on a single place, each
user
may post
photos, classifieds,
wheather info, and many more.

The site is currently
working, I am doing a lot of changes
in my

like to have your feedback and help
if
possible,
the idea is that the site
wold be a place for Freedom Users

I extend an invitation to
anyone who wants to help so that
we’ll
soon have a
nice site, remember
this kind of sites are more interesting
if
more people

Also, the current

also any
one else who thinks can
take a few minutes a day and want’s

TIP:
the site is VERY MUCH
better if viewed by a registered user,
unregistered
users will only see parts
of it, (for example wont see

quickly,

The site has almost no

the first 10 to 20 users
signed in, for whatever benefit
that

well too much talk… to
visit the site:
www.sailorspub.com

I’m looking into ways of
porting all that valuable
information of
the yahoo
forum to set it up on a
common knoledge section on the
site, if
anyone has
the previous forum backups
that could be of great help too.

Hope this initiative does
good to all

I’m no computer expert, but I think most web sites, and hosting services, permit you to select how you want to check messages: on the web, delivered daily, delivered one by one, notification only, etc.

Personally, I believe an association is more important than a new web site. Yahoo provides a pretty good service for free. Many list-serves do not permit posting photos, files, etc. On the other hand, if you type in Freedom owners or Freedom sailboats in Google, you don’t get this list on the first page, and probably not at all. A separate web site would probably be picked up by the search engines and make the group more visible.

Besides the help it could provide all of us, an active owners association can help maintain the value of out of production boats.> > Al Lorman> > -----Original Message-----> From: Manrique Feoli [mailto:manrique.feoli@k…] > Sent: Wednesday, November 17, 2004 5:48 PM> To: freedomyachts2003@yahoogroups.com> Subject: RE: [freedomyachts2003] Re: New home for Freedom Owners forum, Join it and be a founder member> > > You are right Bill, I could fix this since I’m in the process of building> the site, but… , I kind of agree with your reasons (and others too).> > been the developper of the new site, I really don’t mind if IT IS or IT IS> NOT chosen to be THE official home, I really thought originally I could> help the “community” with some extra services, most of them still to come> since I launched the site in a somewhat early stage of development,> The original idea was of this being the first step to, passed some time and> gathering and waking up more users, create a “Freedom Boat Owners> Association”, in which case I would donate the name and the site to the> association… , (or have a new domain name for the association and keep> all the work of this site and just modify it to the new name).> > But I tell you what, this kind of things are born naturally or not at all,> I’ll keep the new site up as an extra services source for whoever needs it> either Freedom user or not, I would personally feel less commited anyway> since now would be a personal project more than a “property” the group, and> we can all keep posting on the yahoo site as we have been doing for the last> year or so.> > As a personal thing I’ll try to take some of my time to build interesting> features on the site (as long as doesn’t interfere with my sailing time of> course), like following up Ocean Racers, and circumnavigators and, if> possible, have private sponsors to organize events to users of Freedom,> Hunter, divers or whatever the new orientation of the site is.> > I’ll keep the yahoo Freedom mailing list posted of new features in case> anyone would like to to pop in at www.SailorsPub.com .
