Now that I’ve had some time to play with my new main, I have to say
that it fits the bill perfectly. It works through all the wind ranges,
is easy to power up and depower, is more manageable than the old main,
and I think will prove to be more durable. In fact, it’s making my
tired old mizzen look bad! Overall, keeping the new main was a good
choice.
I use the word ‘choice’ deliberately, because after reading through my
original post about the delivery, it may not have been clear that I
was given the opportunity - on the spot - to send the sail back and
have a new one built to the dimensions of the old main. It was a
sincere offer, and under different circumstances, I might have taken
Jeff up on it.
The reasons that I didn’t are manifold, but here’s the key one: the
sail Haarstick built, the one currently on my 25 year old boat, has
the dimensions that Freedom and TPI came up with as being the properly
sized, designed, and shaped for the innovative boat that my F40 CK is.
It would have been an entirely different story if the sail had been
too small, or looked shoddy, or was obviously not ‘spec,’ but that
wasn’t the case.
While debate can rage about who is ultimately responsible for the
initial mix-up in sail size (an argument could be made that it is the
previous owner’s, for not telling me it was non-standard, or mine for
not asking him, or getting out the tape measure, or… ), what I was
reassured by was the level of service Jeff was willing to go to to
make sure that I - his customer - was satisfied. That counts for a lot.
It counts enough that I’ll take the lessons from this experience and
apply them when I order my new mizzen from Jeff.
I’ve lost track or wasn’t paying attention to the new sail discussion. I need a new cambarspar jib for my Freedom32. I have a quote from Haarstick. It was suggested to me that I could go elsewhere and get a perfectly good sail-equally as good for a better price, however, the newer design is better than what I have in my 1985, and I would want that. How would i describe that to a sailmaker, as when he comes to my boat to see what I have it wouldn’t be what I wan?

Sward,
when I was researching a new main through this group and elsewhere,
there were several different sailmakers that claimed to have Freedom
experience. If you have a sail idea, simply talk to other
sailmakers. they may have similarly updated sail ideas for your 32
as well.
