I just bought new sails from Haarstick. Since they’re still in my basement awaiting the launch of my F30, I can’t comment on how they fit, hold up, etc. But when I went through the exercise you’re going through now, I decided that Haarstick’s knowledge of Freedoms was worth whatever extra cost was involved. (I did buy them during their 20% off winter sale.) They are no more expensive than other top lofts for sails made in the US. Any sails that are dramatically less expensive will be made offshore or by lofts, such as Cruising Direct, which offer limited services and didn’t answer my emails. I found Steve Haarstick and the other folks I dealt with there very knowledgeable and responsive. Assuming the sails fit, and I have no reason to doubt they will, I’m happy with my decision.

Haarstick and
North were the two I compared for our F45.
I chose North for the lighter weight material
they offer for the main and I wanted their gennaker sock. I cannot say too much about their
service, quality and the result is terrific. Very happy. I used Thurston for Freedom knowledge re
the camber spar jib and they also installed our Strong
Track.

Just to add to Steve’s comments, I too have bought a new ‘main’ for
my F40 - a totally unforseen expense this year. Jeff at the
Haarstick loft in Rhode Island was extremely helpful, informative,
and understanding of the unique requirements of a Freedom sail. I
take delivery on May 1, so I don’t know, either, what I’m in for.
But I will say this - I used to work for a sail loft run by Kevin
Farrar in CT. When I was looking at lofts, he listed what he
considered to be the best dacron manufacturers in the world.
Haarstick’s list of manufacturers matched up with his pretty much
perfectly.
I decided to go with a loose-footed main and two reef points - I’m
really looking forward to seeing how it performs.

Sails
I have had
sails built by North, Halsey Lidgard and UK. North
built a spinnaker for a freedom 36. The only problem is they did not
understand the freedom recovery system and placed the recovery attachment on
the outside of the sail rather then on the inside of the sail. Lidgard
built a main and jib for the 36, the main was built in Africa and had a couple of QC issues. The webbing cutouts on the
headboard were not rounded and sawed thru the webbing in under 2 hours of use
and the batten pockets failed at the track with the batten extending past the
mast. Both problems were resolved with no cost. The main and mizzen
for my 44 were built by UK, out of New Orleans, though they were actually manufactured
in the NY loft. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out if the lofts
understood the different requirements for a flexible un-stayed masts and the
ability to carry a lot of roach. UK seemed to be
the best in New Orleans on that issue since the head of the
loft in NY use to work for Freedom. Again, there were some problems with
the batten pockets. I had specked “loose footed” and the
sails were built otherwise, though I have mounted the loose footed.
I think any
loft that can understand the unique rig can build a good sail, but most of us
will need to have continued access thru the life of the sail and I was looking
for both original quality and maintainability. UK has been grate with the after sale service.
I thing I have
worked out the bugs now and would kind of believe that that will occur with
nearly any provider.
It is very
important to be an educated purchaser. I have seen and sailed some really
bad sails and it was not the manufacturer that was at fault, but the previous
owner specking a sail that could be raised by a 100 lb. 60 year old woman rather
then to put in a powered halyard winch. The sail was a rag, not the fault
of the loft.

Want to be clear
that I feel Haarstick is excellent resource.
I chose North for materials with no
regrets. They had also done four other
F45s.
