I’ve begun to think about new sails for my F-30. The big lofts all
charge about the same. Rolly Tasker Sails, made in Thailand, are
really a bargain. Does anyone have any experience with them? Or
are Freedom sails too complicated (especially the jib) to trust to
an off-shore company?

Haarstick is my leading US candidate, but the price differential is amazing.

Brian Guptil put a new Halsey Lidgard (sp?) main and
jib on Sparrow, but went with Haarstick for the chute.
All three sails are gorgeous, and way stout. Write him
in care of sailordude@… for particulars. Very
knowledgeable and helpful guy. Cheers, Jacqui Mac

If you deal with Halsey Lidgaard, make sure you have some quotes in
hand first, and don’t flinch when Halsey’s much higher. Get their
quote, then show them the quotes you have from Rolly, Haarstick,
whomever. Halsey has been known to do some price matching.
I don’t know how much experience they have with Freedoms, but they
built the loose-footed main, #1, #2, and spinnaker for the Pearson
Wanderer I race on, and they’re excellent sails.
I had Quantam construct a jib for my F 35 and they messed up the jib pocket supremely. They loft the sails in Rhode Island but manufacture and ship them from South Africa.
From now on I will go back to Haarstick the original manufacturer.

Those of you who went with sailmakers other than Haarstick - Did you have the sailmaker come to the boat to measure and fit the sails, or did they cut the sails sight unseen?
My rigger keeps nudging me to use the local Ullman or UK lofts.
Thomas
SailMakers:
I have had 4 sails built on 2 contracts. All of them were measured and compared with the data base that the lofts keep. But there is always a possibility of deviation on the boat, or error in the data base. With a standard cut, we found that the mizzen on the 44 would have been too low to allow the use of a bimini.
But more important is the lofts understanding of the elliptical roach and flexible mast. You do not want to do someone’s “learning curve” on your sails. I have been satisfied with Halsey Lidgard and UK. I have also used North for a spinnaker. All of them have done many.
But make sure they understand.
The one bad sail set was due to a lousy requirement by a previous owner. He wanted a sail for a 36 that a 95lb, 60ish lady could hoist. It didn’t work.

I went with North Sails in '90 when my F-38 was new. I was so pleased I am replacing main & jib now, with North. I am very pleased especially with the roach in my main. Both times I interviewed Haarstick and found them very helpful and knowledgeable, but I’m on the left-wing coast and it really helps being able to work with people you know, face-to-face. A good friend of mine currently cruising Asia has met Rolly and
bought sails. There is a loft in Santa Cruz, I think, that imports
extensively from RT. I believe it’s called Sail Warehouse or
something to that effect. Chances are they may be able to help you
and provide some mainland support.
Here’s another thought. You might want to have an Asian loft do the
bulk of the work and then have the pocket for the camberspar added
by a local loft. I’m not too familiar with the jibs having only
owned a cat ketch. The more you get done overseas the less you’ll
spend. If you order from Rolly Tasker the sailcloth will be the same
Dimension Polyant or Bainbridge that you get here.
