New Site-Owner Assoc-Name

I hate to be a wet blanket. I just have to produce a little rant.
Seems to me the chatter on the above subjects is a little like Mickey
Rooney and Judy Garland’s: LETS PUT ON A SHOW
I’ve watched this Yahoo site grow from well under 50 members when I
first joined it last year to about 513. I note today the membership
is down to 500. Do you think maybe members or dropins are getting
bored?
I also note there were only 30 members interested enough to vote on
the site poll and 27 on the name poll. Less than 7% of the
membership. That tells me something about the general interest in the
subject issues…
Used to be some very good technical and practical information
exchanged among Freedom owners on this and the original web site. I
hope it can get back to that.

Well, I guess I now know why this is one of the few boat owner
groups in the US without some sort of organization. If you think
that this message board and its predecessor is a good substitute for
an active owners group, then perhaps you’ve never belonged to such a
group. But you are right…there is indeed a small show of support
for an owners group.

P.S. This list doesn’t really have 501 members. Yahoo classifies
138 of them as “bouncing,” which is to say that the messages are
consistently returned.

Yes, I’ll join, I think a lot of us just stand on the sidelines, probably would join just not responding because they don’t know everything pro and con about an association.

Al, pls don’t get discouraged. My
guess is the demand is stronger than it appears. People are busy and may not
see/take the time to reply as this dialogue develops day by day. We do need an
owners association. These boats are of very lasting value, have a prominent
place in the used boat markets, and a loyal following. I sense from the chatter
on the yahoo site, we have a lot of interest in the boats and the technical
exchange, that would be the foundation of a owners association and the website
supporting it. The chat capability would migrate to the association website.
Aren’t there several thousand Freedom owners out there? Heck, we could
recruit owners to join as we come across them in our sailing endeavors. We need
a user’s association. Pls consider pressing on. Just my humble opinion.

Since the question of where the members of the message board have gone, I thought I’d offer one viewpoint as why I have not responded.

First, I had asked a question about a rudder bearing problem on my F-30, of which I did not receive one reply. I since have had it fixed, fortunately, in a way better than Paul Dennis (sp) suggested, as his would have resulted in rudder slop-(and also the reason Freedom installed grease zerks to mask the problem, not fix it.) Paul is a great guy and very generous with his advise, but I chose not to just enlarge the hole for the bearing due to the expansion of the delron bearing.

I used to find the information on this board interesting, and like Jaquie, have saved e-mails for future reference. Since the topic of an association other than this that we can PAY for has created SO much chatter, ie. name costs, etc., I would have one final question:
How do I quit getting the e-mails! I would like to find my important e-mails without sorting thru 100’s of comments about what we call the new Assoc…

Why would it benefit us to have a board that is different that we could all pay dues to? It sounds like someone has a great idea to collect $40/year from potentially a thousand members. Now I think that is a GREAT idea, and would love to have part of that action!

Lastly, I’m glad that some of the members here are’nt on my payroll, as by the time of the many messages (during business hours) I could only ask if I could apply for the job they have when they leave and I’ll give up working for myself. I would love to have that much time on my hands.

Sorry if I offended anyone with my sarcasm, but it seems the question was asked: “why have we not had more interest?”. I thought the reason I didn’t get a response on my latest post, was that I was on the West (Left, as Jaquie put it so well) Coast, and not in the right “club”. I am always curious what makes people want to be a member of a “club, cult, etc.” that alienates them from the rest of society that might just want to spend their money on other things. I really don’t need a shirt with a Freedom logo to signify that I’m a member of an elite club that I have to pay to be a member.
Signing off…have fun with the new “club”

Excellent questions. Do not understand why we need a new group.
Also would like to stop this flood of messages about the new group.
Isn’t there some way to consolidate, reduce or eliminate?

So as not to offend the tender sensibilites of those who do not wish
to participate in a new owners association, would anyone who wishes
to be involved kindly use the special email address I have
established, freedomownersgroup@…, rather than posting at
this site.

Am I missing something?

If you don’t want email, click on “Edit My Membership” at the
Freedom Yahoo site and put a check mark in “No Email.” You won’t get
any. I don’t get any. I just occasionally visit the Yahoo website to
read what’s new. Or, you can choose to have a day’s worth of posts
consolidated into one email if you would prefer that. You’ll never
get more than one a day, always
from “freedomyachts2003@yahoogroups.com

Or get a throwaway account at Yahoo or Hotmail or somewhere and use
that for your email address at the Freedom site. Or write a rule in
your email client to send it all to a “Freedom Yachts” folder and
look at it later at your leisure. Or write a rule to just delete
anything with the words “owners association” in it. Or just delete
the, what,… maximum of 5 messages a day? This isn’t a “flood,” is
it?

Keep the messages coming, everyone. People receiving emails from
this group are doing so by choice, aren’t they?

Since the question of where the members of the

gone, I thought I’d offer one viewpoint as why I
have not responded.

First, I had asked a question about a rudder
bearing problem on my
F-30, of which I did not receive one reply. I since
have had it
fixed, fortunately, in a way better than Paul Dennis
(sp) suggested,
as his would have resulted in rudder slop-(and also
the reason
Freedom installed grease zerks to mask the problem,
not fix it.)
Paul is a great guy and very generous with his
advise, but I chose
not to just enlarge the hole for the bearing due to
the expansion of
the delron bearing.

I used to find the information on this board
interesting, and like
Jaquie, have saved e-mails for future reference.
Since the topic of
an association other than this that we can PAY for
has created SO
much chatter, ie. name costs, etc., I would have one
final question:
How do I quit getting the e-mails! I would like
to find my
important e-mails without sorting thru 100’s of
comments about what
we call the new Assoc…

Why would it benefit us to have a board that is
different that we
could all pay dues to? It sounds like someone has a
great idea to
collect $40/year from potentially a thousand
members. Now I think
that is a GREAT idea, and would love to have part of
that action!

Lastly, I’m glad that some of the members here
are’nt on my
payroll, as by the time of the many messages (during
business hours)
I could only ask if I could apply for the job they
have when they
leave and I’ll give up working for myself. I would
love to have
that much time on my hands.

Sorry if I offended anyone with my sarcasm, but it
seems the
question was asked: “why have we not had more
interest?”. I thought
the reason I didn’t get a response on my latest
post, was that I was
on the West (Left, as Jaquie put it so well) Coast,
and not in the
right “club”. I am always curious what makes people
want to be a
member of a “club, cult, etc.” that alienates them
from the rest of
society that might just want to spend their money on
other things.
I really don’t need a shirt with a Freedom logo to
signify that I’m
a member of an elite club that I have to pay to be a
member.
Signing off…have fun with the new “club”

I hate to be a wet blanket. I just have to
produce a little rant.
Seems to me the chatter on the above subjects is
a little like
Mickey
Rooney and Judy Garland’s: LETS PUT ON A SHOW
I’ve watched this Yahoo site grow from well
under 50 members
when I
first joined it last year to about 513. I note
today the
membership
is down to 500. Do you think maybe members or
dropins are
getting
bored?
I also note there were only 30 members
interested enough to vote
on
the site poll and 27 on the name poll. Less
than 7% of the
membership. That tells me something about the
general interest
in the
subject issues…
Used to be some very good technical and
practical information
exchanged among Freedom owners on this and the
original web
site. I
hope it can get back to that.

As you know I completely agree with Al’s endeavour of the Owners association
(I may be a bit guilty of having started this whole mess, my apologies).
However I think threre is no reason to open up a new board only for this
discussion, (same reasons all said about the site at www.sailorspub.com)
this will divide the group which does no good.

With the current yahoo mail list, It is a matter of each one filtering
his/her mail, (As Rick pointed out) and understanding that it is not only
about asking and expecting answers, it is also about reading other people’s
views and respectfully sharing your thoughts about them TO HELP, even if
you are not interested in the subject. Answers will come once many people
does this, and we will have a very rich knoledge community where to attend
when we are in trouble or need it. Either with or without joining an actual
association .

One last comment
the reason this discussion is bothering some is due basically to the
threading issue I first talked about and tried to address at the
www.sailorspub.com site by settling a thread-based forum, to help people to
browse by subject only about what they where really interested. (which
really doesn’t work that well on yahoo, check it out). The read and post
via email without having to browse the web could be solved.

so my conclusion is we have to continue talking on the same yahoo forum,
choose a domain name and when time is right for all but not too far in the
next months, we should move (only once and for the last time) to a thread
based forum owned by an association, and the real interested owners will
join. I offer the knoledge I gathered while building and the main structure
of www.sailorspub.com for the new site www.wichevernameAsociation.org and
with some input from you all could have a decent place to share thoughts.
(and no need of hardly any money at all, maybe 7.95 for the domain name!)

So as not to offend the tender sensibilites of those who do not wish
to participate in a new owners association, would anyone who wishes
to be involved kindly use the special email address I have
established, freedomownersgroup@…, rather than posting at
this site.

As you know I completely agree with Al’s endeavour of the Owners association(I may be a bit guilty of having started this whole mess, my apologies). However I think threre is no reason to open up a new board only for thisdiscussion, (same reasons all said about the site at www.sailorspub.com)this will divide the group which does no good. With the current yahoo mail list, It is a matter of each one filteringhis/her mail, (As Rick pointed out) and understanding that it is not onlyabout asking and expecting answers, it is also about reading other people’sviews and respectfully sharing your thoughts about them TO HELP, even ifyou are not interested in the subject.
