I checked into the price for a new spinnaker with Haarstick and
Somerset Sails. Haarstick wants $900 for a new spinnaker and Somerset’s
price is $325. Tell me about your Somerset spinnaker.

Hi Allen,
Martin, at Somerset Sails, http://www.somersetsails.com, made a
mainsail for me and repaired my spinnaker. The mainsail looks great
and the spinnaker was given a new life.
This was my first sail purchase, so I can’t compare Somerset Sails to
another company. What I can say is that I was greatly impressed with
Martin. He used to to work for other sail makers and decided he could
do it better for less. His sail designs are generated my an industry
standard computerized database. Those designs are then printed on
paper using a giant printer. The cloth is hand cut and sewn using
extra strong stitching.
Martin was able to work with me to help me make the best decision for
my mainsail. I opted for a radial design that is very impressive. Hi
shop is an impressive place to visit.
The question you have to ask is what makes the more expensive sail
worth the additional money. Once you have those criteria in mind, call
Martin and tell him your concerns. If he can’t offer the same specs,
buy the more expensive sail.
Lastly, there is the issue of brand. If it is important to you to have
a label with a well known brand sewn to your sail, be willing to pay
for it. It gives you bragging rights when you visit high class
marinas.
