New (to us) 1984 Freedom 32

Posted by Larry (kracherlandl@…>)

Hi all,

My wife and I purchased a Freedom 32 this winter. Since, we have been
reading all the manuals and getting ready for spring.

3 questions

  1. The manual says the first thing to do when flying the gun mount
spinnaker, is tighten the back stay. What back stay? The diagrams show
no stays at all and only a guy wire for the small jib. Any guidance?

  2. Holding tank for the 32 is only 12 gallons. This is small for a
Great Lakes boat. Has anyone added holding tank capacity on a 32? Some
people say the bladder types smell. Any advice?

  3. Does anyone have an original 32 manual I could copy? The one that
came with our boat is a copy that has pages that don’t make sense.

Thanks

Larry

For whatever it is worth, I am moving my 1991 F38 to Great Lakes from East Coast, and had only a very small holding tank. I put in a polyethylene tank, 30 gallons, that Ronco Plastics (in California) made for me to dimensions specified by Paul Dennis of Warren River Boat Works. It is triangular shaped and mounted on port side under vee-berth. I also changed out all sanitation hoses with the highest grade available–I think I paid around $6 a linear foot! Very happy with this set up, and no odor whatsoever.

Larry, on my F-30, which is very similar to the 32 ex the swim platform, the spinnaker is controlled by a number of lines. There is no backstay on the mast.
The sail is hoisted by the spinnaker halyard, and is connected to a furler system in the bow pulpit. The big spinnaker pole is inserted thru the gun mount tube with a pin holding it centered. The boat now looks like a hammerhead shark. Make sure to check the nut holding the gun mount tube every once in awhile, because they are very difficult to replace-btw, anyone have an extra?

There are two lines that attach to the pole, one to each end, which allows you to vary the angle of the pole. I normally try to have it about parallel to the boom. There are two sheet lines, sometimes called spinnaker reins, which are tied to the respective corners of the sail, lead thru small blocks at the end of the pole, then back to small blocks near the transom. From these blocks, the sheets terminate into small cam cleats. The last lines are for furling or un-furling the sail itself, and terminate in the rope clutches on the cabin top.

When underway, it is pretty simple to adjust the pole angle, then the sheets, for proper trim.

Good luck with the new boat, I’m sure you will love it.

Kent,

Thank you for the rapid response! I jusy joined the group this AM and
posted my message at the same time. I’ve been told that the Freedom
Yacht owners are a great group that loves their boats.

Unfortunately, our boat is still under shrink wrap, so I’m trying to
figure these things out while laying on my belly on the deck, and
reading the manuals that I have. Your information makes things alot
more clear. I’ve been scratching my head wondering how the roller
furling can work with a jib that uses a camber spar. The roller furling
must be for the spinnaker.

The new boat is like a jigsaw puzzle that we’re trying to figure out.
We’ve chartered since 1985, but decided to buy a boat while we’re still
young enough to learn all the systems. We just can’t wait for the
Minnesota ice to thaw and get started.

Thank you for your kind help!

Best regards,

Larry Kraus

Its pretty simple, write if you have questions. The jib Does Not furl, but its self tacking, so its simple to tack, turn the wheel and try not to spill your drink.
I’m originally from Minnesota, so know what its like waiting for ice. Will you be out of Bayfield or on Tonka?

Hi Michael,

Where is the head located in your F38? The head in our F32 is aft Port
side and the holding tank is diectly behind it with access from the
Port cockpit locker. Did you install the atnkl yourself or did you have
a yard do it?

I wouldn’t worry about the holding tank till you tried it for a season or two. You won’t be away from a pumpout station for too long and you will be looking at a major time and costly project. We just use ours on the Sound but pump out perhaps twice a season-granted we don’t live aboard.
Feel free to write if you have rigging questions, although once its set up, its awfully simple. Welcome to the family. Kent

Subject: [freedomyachts2003] New (to us) 1984 Freedom 32

Thanks

Larry

My head is port side between main salon and forward cabin. My yard did the work–removal of old and installation of new tank and hoses. Not cheap, but very well done.
Someone here suggested you live with boat for a while before making any changes, and that is not a bad idea, but I should mention that my yard said they doubted my old holding tank was even the 12 gallons advertised…more like 7-8. You might want to figure out your tank’s actual holding capacity before you head out for a long cruise!

Hi Michael,Where is the head located in your F38? The head in our F32 is aft Port side and the holding tank is diectly behind it with access from the Port cockpit locker. Did you install the atnkl yourself or did you have a yard do it?Larry KMichael G Katz wrote:

For whatever it is worth, I am moving my 1991 F38 to Great Lakes from East Coast, and had only a very small holding tank. I put in a polyethylene tank, 30 gallons, that Ronco Plastics (in California) made for me to dimensions specified by Paul Dennis of Warren River Boat Works. It is triangular shaped and mounted on port side under vee-berth. I also changed out all sanitation hoses with the highest grade available–I think I paid around $6 a linear foot! Very happy with this set up, and no odor whatsoever.

Just before I sold my F32, I scanned the entire manual. It is still
in the files section of this site.
