Open Flame Question

Posted by lioneldmp7 (doug.payne@…>)

Before I do something totally stupid, I think I better ask this
question. I just installed a new Newmar 3 stage battery charger in the
engine compartment of my Freedom Mull 28. I have four terminal
connectors to install to complete the wiring. I normally use a small
propane driven open flame to shrink the heat shrink. Where I will be
heating the terminals is about a foot from my two lead acid batteries.
I don’t own a heat gun. Am I about to blow my self to pieces? Batteries
give off gases, but I don’t know the details. Rather be safe than
stupid.

STOP!!!
Lead acid batteries are full of and emit hydrogen gas - very explosive. These should not be in the engine compartment at all. Please tell us that they are in a separate compartment.

They are right where the factory installed
them about two feet behind the Yanmar diesel.

Sorry, that’s where the Freedom factory put them in Mull 28-footer.
Lead acid batteries emit hydrogen while they’re being charged (e.g.
when the engine is running, or the battery charger is switched on).
Please note that batteries are also in the engine compartment in
automobiles. I believe there is enough ventilation to get rid of
lighter-than-air hydrogen in the Mull 28’s engine compartment. High
rates of charge cause more hydrogen emitted, and should be
avoided. My 5-amp battery charger and anemic alternator probably
cannot cause a lot of hydrogen to be emitted. If you have all the
covers open to the engine compartment, inactive batteries sitting
there should not be a problem.

You are far more likely to be kicked to death by a rhinocerous than to
have a problem with hydrogen from an open, ventilated campartment as
you describe. However, you can always use an electric soldering iron
to heat the shrink tubing. It just takes slightly longer.

Cheers,

Stan Taylor

I would strongly advise that under no circumstances ever use an open
flame in your engine compartment, if there is a rhinoceros in
there!!!

However if he or she is out for swim or a a stroll, by all means go
for it!

Alway willing to be of help!

Batteries only give of hydrogen when being charged. So you should be
OK. Assuming you have taken all other precautions when using an open
flame.
