I am in Darwin Northern Territory and am looking at buying the
orginal Freedom 40. It was built in the early to mid 80`s. Can any
one give me any tips? They want 80K aus for it. It appears to be in
good condition.

Check the hull for blisters, check hull, deck and coachroof for wet
balsa core (drum with a hammer) and visually check the integrity of
the masts; also check for electrolytic corrosion of the masts under
the mast hardware and at the foot.

Hi,
If you can get an older F-40 for 80,000 Australian Dollar (50,000
Euros) it is a very good price, maybe too good. When I bought my
F-40 Hull #25, I looked at a number of early F-40s—pre 1980.
I had a survey done on each boat–expensive but
worth it. One surveyor sat down with me, at the end of the day
and said: “Do you really want to do this to yourself?” Another
surveyor said: "If this is what you want it is the best I have seen in
a long time—I bought that boat. Needless to say the price on the
two boats were 25,000 Euros apart. A good survey will tell you
what you need to know.
